Here's another one I've had my eye open for for as long as I can remember. Another attempt by Sony to reinvent the portable as a 'home stereo'. Along with the Aiwa Carryin' Compo the Sony CFS-100 is another one that truly was destinned to be covered in dust hidden in the poorly-lit back room along with the uglier family portrates. I was lucky enough to be given this beauty by fellow member and almost a neighbour NevOne yesterday. I made the mistake of telling him a few months ago how much I loved this thing, I mean, really loved it. I genuinely hope he didn't think I was dropping hints. Need-less-to-say, I hope he realises how gratefull I am. This thing is amazing. Firstly, it is a boombox. It has fixing points for a shoulder strap and it takes batteries so it's a boombox, isn't it? Unlike other Sony units of the period this thing is stuffed with the usual pointless features, loudness, timer standby, AFC, ISS, DX, Local, etc, etc. Its made from tough silver-coated plastic with a brushed-steel front. One thing I have noticed is that it uses the same cassette mechanism as the glorious D5. Here's a marketing pic so you get some idea of where Sony were trying to position this. I never really understoof this concept as this thing was clearly quite expensive so surely if you really wanted a small home stereo there are better cheaper options. My theory is that it's to apeal to people with executive lifestyles with not much space. I don't know. Anyway, here it is, enjoy...

Japanese tend to have small houses and apartments so small equipment is desirable. They also admire things that have been miniaturised. Think Bonsai trees. Therefore this would definitely make sense for the Japanese market.
Yeah very cool. I wish i knew you wanted one, I had one not so long ago, it came in a leather bag with red velvet inserts etc. Was a lovely thing and weighed a ton.
T, now there's a funny thing, who'd have thoght? What did you do with it in the end? And where did you get it?
I sold it in the end to a fellow i know who lives near us, he doesn't collect boxes or anything, he's an antique dealer but he took a liking to it. I originally found it at a flea market type stall near me, there is a guy there who sells old hifi and i have had some good luck there so tend to call in there every other week or so to see what he has. I was going to ebay it but it was so damn heavy....
Wow, interesting. Can the speakers attach to the main unit, or do you have to carry them in that velvet bag?
That's a major Arkay Level find T-ster, those Sony CFS-100's are really cool and auction pricing reflects it. I've had my eye out for one but they're either very expensive and in great shape or just beat on and missing parts. That bag is the first I've seen, very drool-worthy, I'm surprised anyone would let that one go.
Damn, I think I want that case. I'm going to have a go at making the wooden stand in the pic. NevOne suggests making it so the unit it flush with the speakers, seems obvious, not too sure why Sony didn't do this.

I don't know, i see him most weekends i might ask him. I sold it to him for £15 to as i had no idea it was worth anything back then....
