Hi Folks, I'm getting closer to doing things... I am going to do an SMD training board, then a spectrum analyser, and then I'm going to start work on the equipment. There have been some posts about grease, but I've searched in the UK and haven't been able to find the same products here. I do believe that the motors could do with a very light (one drop) of oil every few years themselves. So, if anyone can point me to a supply of grease and oil for the cogs and motors, I'd be most grateful. And then... I think I've finally got all I need to get cracking.
Amsoil 5W30 is recommended by the professional cassette deck Guru at tapeheads forum. White Lithium grease for the plastic, but only if it was used originally, but I never saw any need to substitute that grease, it never dries out... and it is not used very often, just in Discmans sled gears and sometimes in bboxes. For whatever reason, some folks make a point of avoiding machine sewing oil, but I had no experience with those: I bought a set of oil/grease recommended for Zeiss microscope objectives for when I was reviving those, and use this same set for my Discmans/bboxes. I can find its original box, but the price will be higher than a few bucks for a quart of 5W30...
Cheers. Good advice. This is giving me a great step forward. The final caps are here, so I'm "gearing" up now - **cough** - yes, I know... exit... stage left...
