Thanks for the warning. I'll try some of the diagnostic checks given in the service manual first. If it looks as if the laser unit has failed then an Ebay unit may be the way to go.
The 701C sounds amazing! But as other have said, this series have VERY small and fragile units. It’s hard to find one that is in great shape and have no speed/door alignment issues. I got 4 of those and only 1 works 100%. If you are looking for portability, very good sound (but not quite the D6C best sound), I’d recommend those higher end Sony models from early the 2000s. I have 2 of the model that Techmoan recommends on his video and I recommended it!
