I picked up a really beautiful WM-F2095 in a job lot and I'm trying to get it working. The unit powers on, red light shows, FM/AM radio works a treat - sounds radical. When I hit play no cassette action, so naturally I ordered a new belt, but when I came to take it apart I found the motor doesn't spin when play is engaged so I can't work out what the problem is. Is it something straightforward or something deeply wrong? Any help or guidance would be very appreciated! Thanks so much, Harv P.S some pics of the inside [GALLERY=media, 1138]WM-F2095 05 by Harvey Jones posted Sep 3, 2018 at 9:24 PM[/GALLERY][GALLERY=media, 1141]WM-F2095 02 by Harvey Jones posted Sep 3, 2018 at 9:24 PM[/GALLERY][GALLERY=media, 1142]WM-F2095 01 by Harvey Jones posted Sep 3, 2018 at 9:24 PM[/GALLERY]
Unfortunately this unit is the same innards as my wm-f2097 that I have had 3 of. None worked properly and all needed to be recapped. I used them for practice on and successfully recapped one but they are hard to do as there are lots of capacitors to do.
What a shame! I guess they're quite prone to this defect, I haven't seen inside many Walkmans but this one is definitely the most complex and delicate mechanism I've seen so far. I have the motor a push and no dice how hard is it to replace the capacitors? I'm a medium level solder guy, with shakey hands hah Thanks for your help
Yep not the easiest machines to pull apart, I have managed to change the belt on my F2097 which had lost its elasticity, even managed to put it all together with great patience but although the motor runs and the tape plays ok, it wont latch on play, in either direction so I have to hold the play button down, fast forward and rewind work fine to but again have to hold the buttons down, trouble is when pulling the PCB way from the mechanism body to look what is going on the power is disconnected from the battery, any ideas what could be not allowing the play button to latch, anyone >
Yes, I confirm this walkman will need a recap and this type of mechanism will also need a new clutch gear, besides the belt. Loose table reel shafts can also be an issue, requiring you to glue to the back gear. New gear: https://fixyouraudio.com/product/sony-wm-f2095-clutch-gear/ I recommend looking here: https://stereo2go.com/forums/threads/list-of-walkman-portable-recorders-common-problems.7535/ (post #18), as there is an entire series of walkmans which share similar problems. Also recommend looking at the link in my signature, where all the threads I did are organized.
