I hope this doesn't keep happening to me..............

I bought this lovely RX-5030L which arrived today with a smashed casing, corner post & just to make things worse, cracked tracks on the Pcb around the tone control which unsurprisingly completely fucked up the sound!! Both channels were merging resulting in that odd phasing no vocals effect :(

Add to that a machine that fought back with problem after problem & almost ending up in the bin outside!! I am so pissed off as it was very very nice before it was posted needing only a new belt as fast forward & play were weak although still struggling to work after nearly 40 years :O

Packing was truly dreadful, poor thing didn't stand a chance of arriving undamaged............I got nearly all my money back but that isn't what I wanted - A panny 5030 undamaged would have made my day - Now I am left with this machine which is now working 100% & looks shite..........So annoyed!!

Casing damage was bad, the post that's used to screw the main case together was smashed & it took a part of the front panel with it & on top of that the paper thin cardboard box had holes in both ends facilitating the escape of all the smaller plastic bits & one large bit, gone forever!!

I repaired the deck & pcb quite quickly after pissing about trying to find out why it sounded so odd!! 4 tracks to scrape back & bridge & that restored correct left & right channel operation on radio & tape!

I forgot to take images of the re-belt & pcb - I was so annoyed is why I think.........

I did my best with what I had left of the casing & mounting post - I am not great with these sort of things anymore, I used to have such steady hands & deft fingers, illness has been prohibitive - Stroke & brain damage is an evil illness to endure & today I was reminded of that with this stereo!

I love this model & have waited a long time for a nice one - for a middling machine these have very nice sound & they look so good - What a design!!

Anyway, I am going to let the images & video finish this sorry tale.............& I am still loking for a nice example of one of these!!

    Et Fucking Viola!!

Argh that's gutting that is, survived for 30+ years then broken up in shitty packing....

Glad you got it running again, repair looks as good as it could I think. Could possibly fill it and repaint but you would need to do the hole case.

I've dropped a box or two over the years and know the feeling. Usually I don't want to touch them at all after that and I seem to put them somewhere where I have to look at them all the time and be reminded of my stupidity.

It looks like this Panny got an extra "bass port" ;)

and in need of a sticker for the front, Garfield saves me in these situations, as in here:

Good thing that you had your money back Nick.
You are now left with a boombox to experiment cosmetically.

Maybe one of these days I also get lucky and get myself such a beauty, to put my plastic jet modeller skills to good use, not just another smirk from the Boss and family: "one more toy wasting space and collecting dust!" Wish I were on the right side of the Pond to repair its cracks for you!!! Sniffing polystyrene glue and epoxy fillers is my fix :)

I am just no good at cosmetic repairs at all, never have been - it's what's inside that I can't stay away from until it's fixed...........got so much on at the moment too including a new girlfriend who is taking up a lot of my time which is just perfect!!

As a footnote I would add that I can spray paint with the best of them - 21 years in the car trade repairing bodywork & spraying etc! These are on a much smaller scale of course & there is just no way I could do anything like that now.......I have sprayed many a set of speaker grilles in the last 6 odd years & they always come out looking superb unlike my attempts to brush paint woofer cones............

Oh-man!... I so geel your pain on this, from two different instances:

When I learned of Sony 200-disc CD carousels getting cheap second-hand, I learned what models were the top and jumped at an eBay find with free shipping. It arrived at my doorstep loosely packed in a make-shift box, looking as if it had been drop-kicked there from the curb! And the unit inside didn't look much better.

Also, I lent my original Panasonic SGJ-500 to the local boy scout troop for the night--just one night, for a few hours--and it came back looking like it got into a street war. Add to it when the volume control went bad, and onto the shelf it went... for many, many years.

I lent out too many boomers when I was a young man.........quite a few either never came back or they got 'Dropped Off' by persons unknown & damaged ☹ such bad memories still haunt me, that's why I try & get as many of my teenage & early adult stereo's back again to keep safe & working! Crazy I think but that's just me!

This is a grand idea for a separate thread: lending your prized possessions to BFF!!! That is how my headphone listening ended in early 90-ies: my best buddy borrowed my one and only set of Technics for two weeks... and then I had to dump them! Never bought used hphones since, the look of those oily earpads haunt me to this day

My friends know I don't lend out anything, tools and books are even worse, for some reason people think they don't have to give them back, but if they do it's okay for pizza stains and grease everywhere....

Do not even start me on books: my dad had one serious collection of sci-fi, and I was the one, cute kitty, to get them back from his friends. It is very honorable to "share the love" but thats how I learned that educating noncompoops is a waste of time... Getting back my full set of Doors CDs from a buddy, all soaked wet with CDs used for beer coasters was the last nail into my Goodness coffin!

@Mister X this is how God defined bbox listening! And this is why I stay with "military-style" boxes: navigating the doorway with a restored baby on your hands is sometimes treacherous!!

The little guys are even worse Jorge, sure there's an eject or door open button but that doesn't matter when brut force will get the cassette door open. It's amazing that a lot of this equipment did survive, I do like when people can pick it up and feel something that's made with quality but sometimes the idiot gene kicks in.

Good pointer, I did try to sneak one of these into my collection under pretense that its for my Boss's (WTF, how else to spell this?!) Jeep Wrangler. No such luck, she is vigilant!!!
My "to-go" bbox now is this Panasonic:
    L1140511.JPG

side bars are, unfortunately, plastic... but the grilles are made from industrial-strength steel!
