Greetings all. Okay, so walkmans are normally my thing, but I couldn't resist purchasing this great little sharp boomer. It a CD-Jx20. I remember these coming out when I was a wee lad. They were big bucks at the time, and I couldn't afford one, but I always hoped some day I'd get my hands on one. So I managed to get this one recently . It was filthy when I received it . A few spiders had made it there home. So I took it apart, every piece, until I was left with just the plastic casings. I carefully cleaned and lubed all moving parts. Polished all the plastics. It is absolutely spotless now, and fully working. I'm sure the die hard boombox collectors on here wouldn't really call this a proper boombox, I get that. But I absolutely love it. The sound from it is awesome. Really punchy bass from the speakers. Nice to bring it back from the dead. Delighted with it.
Congratulations on finally getting the boombox you always wanted. I was commenting in the collecting thread how people want to buy the items they couldn't have, or had and then lost, as a child. IMHO if the sound booms, and it can run of batteries (the more the merrier) then it is a boombox. Even die hard boombox collectors will admit that the JVC Kabooms are some of the best sounding boxes ever made, although they might also claim they are the ugliest. This was probably from the same era.
"Sharp-looking" bbox you got there, I like it! If it was not double-cassette thing, this would jump onto my wish-list!!! (to keep myself in check I avoid three-piecers and double-deckers) Reminds me of Gallo Acoustics speakers which were soo hip decade-or-two back... Your Power Tower is real mighty!!!
Thanks guys. Yes I've owned that stack system from new. It was pretty much top end when I purchased it. Still works the same as the day I got it. The only thing I had to do was replace the belts on the decks. Powerful system .
That's a nice box, I know what you mean, it's just on the 90s side of boomers the purists dont like so much but i think this is a cool box and i bet it sounds great
I love the way they designed those speakers, almost like a twin bazookas and not over the top like some of the models that followed. I'm with Jorge on the cassette deck area, the designer kind of dropped the ball when he had all this cool space to work with, but to give them a little credit, it was a very popular style when cassettes were starting to fade they highlighted the CD player more. I wonder in the era of the mega boxes if this is a rare one-piece'r, I feel like most of those huge mega-watters were three units. Don't worry about the purist, it's nice to see all of the boomboxes and personal cassette players made, I've been secretly posting pre-80's units which they also consider not a "proper boombox".
Just a quick update. Shortly after creating this thread, I noticed a few problems with the unit. The first problem I noticed was with the cd player. It wouldn't play tracks beyond numbers 10 or higher. This was a real pain. For instance a Leonard Cohen cd I have, has 20 tracks. I also noticed some of the buttons on the top of the unit wouldn't work, so the only way to play a cd was by using the remote. I then noticed an identical unit on eBay Germany. I got it pretty cheap, 70 euro which included postage. The seller stated that it was optically perfect, but it wouldn't read cd's, and was showing an error. I took a chance and purchased it. When I received it, it was clear it hadn't been used much. It was pretty much spotless. I put a cd in it, and it showed the error "no disk". I then opened the cd door, spun the disc and closed it quickly. It worked fine, and has been ever since. I presume the motor was slightly stiff from lack of use. Luckily it came with its original user manual. The spec list states the output at 7.5 watts rms per channel. It also has active servo technology. This works by monitoring the speakers for distortion, and adjusting the sound if distortion is detected. I have listening to music at pretty high volumes, and there is no distortion whatsoever. This stereo packs a serious punch. I also like that the volume knob on top of the unit is motorised, like you often see on some high end stereo systems.
