So I found a sony WM-D6C on the street a few years back. I am now in the process of restoring it. But there a re several issues.

1.) There is no sound output on any of the ports for tape and the line in.

So far I tried removing the mute module by the line-out. No sound still. Maybe it's that DC DC converter? Also I'm using a ac/dc universal power supply set to 6V. It's 1200 mA

2.) The record button is stuck on the off position.

Something mechanical seems to be the issue but I'm not sure. When I Push the little lever located where you put the tape, i am able to press the rec button. Is me inserting the tape suppose to flip the lever? Because it currently doesn't

    3.) Counter doesn't work

4.) Does not power on by batteries

5.) when Plugged in it hums a bit.

    Any suggestions will be appreciated!

    Hello and welcome.

    In answer to your questions:

    1. The problem could be the DC -DC converter. If it is not generating 11V then Mihokm has posted an excellent guide to repairing it here:

    Repairing DC - DC converter

The 11V rail supplies the line amp IC (IC301). Without IC301 working you won't get any sound out from the line out or headphone out jacks.

If the walkman has plugged into a DC power supply with the polarity reversed (it should be centre pin negative) then you will probably find that it plays too fast. This is due to the CX20084 IC (IC601) getting damaged.

    2. Normally a cassette deck won't go into record mode if the plastic record protect tabs have been knocked out from the cassette. These are located on the back of the cassette, by the little lever which you have found. This system allows you to protect a valuable recording from being recorded over. The tabs are normally missing on pre-recorded tapes.

    3. The very thin counter drive belt may be stretched or broken. In any case, the belts, idlers and pinch roller should be replaced due to the age of the walkman.

    4. Could be corroded battery terminals, damaged PCB track or the "DC" in socket is damaged. There is a contact inside this switch which allows the walkman to run from the batteries when there is no DC power supply plugged in. Maybe the contact is loose or corroded.

    5. Could be a problem with the power supply you are using or a problem with the internal grounding.

I have posted some notes about the grounding on the D6C here.

You need to get hold of a service manual (which can be found online) and work through with a meter. Take lots of photographs and make lots of notes as you are working. Before you take anything out, make sure you have notes and photographs so that you can re-fit it.

Take your time and don't be afraid to ask questions. Good luck.

So I changed out the components on the dc dc converter with
BC817-25 6B and a 33Uh 330K 1/2W Axial Rf Choke Coil Inductor. I got the appropriate power supply now changed all the rubbers, took out the mute module and still no sound. Any ideas? Maybe a bad cap somewhere?

EEk! So After I changed the belts the dials stopped spinning. It was working before I changed them out. I opened it up after and found if i do half clicks with the play/ff/rw buttons the flywheel will spin, but if I do full clicks the fly wheel doesn't spin. Also I think the motor is constant. Is that normal?

    Also still no audio. Halp!
