Just finished restoring a very nice PC-3, this resto actually starts 5 years ago when I bought a very rough non working PC-3 just because it had the handle, rear cable cover, speaker brackets and all the original cables. The problem with this box was the main circuit board was in several pieces which is in the tuner section not really repairable, the cassette section however worked fine with new belts fitted. So I just put it away waiting for a cheap PC-3 with no handle etc. I found one on Ebay a few moths ago no handle or cable cover with a faulty cassette section in very nice condition, but priced too high. it was listed several times with a lower price, then BIN £60 or best offer. I made a very low offer pointing out it had no handle, no rear cable cover and the speakers needed re-foaming offer accepted . Anyway I ordered some cheap foams from China £6 for 10 expecting them to be junk, but when they eventually arrived they're perfectly usable, not quite the correct size though the the inner diameter to the roll is about 2mm bigger than listed, but still usable. The speaker cones were very yellowed, so painted these white turned out well and look really nice. First job after cleaning the new arrival was to remove the speaker grills so the fronts could be removed, not easy as they're glued in place. The service manual says simply run a blade down each side and two points top and bottom hmm? I tried this on the parts box speakers and they came off really easily, but not on the good speakers much more glue, sadly I had to rip them off, see last picture. The faulty deck turned out to be the auto stop sensor so robbed the sensor board from the parts box, deck works great now. Here's the pictures, turned out really nice and sounds great almost as good as my PC-5.
I love the configuration of the components from the first pic. All lined out ! 5 years for a restoration shows determination and patience. Now you have a fresh JVC PC-3 dave. How good is that?
Yeah very pleased with how the woofers turned out, was a bit worried that painting them might affect the sound, but I had a spare pair from the parts box if it all went wrong, I don't think you can beat the sound quality of the original units, they have an amazing frequency range. I'll probably do the same to the speakers in my PC-5, they look so yellow in comparison. Yeah it does look good split down and laid out, definitely worth waiting all those years for the right PC-3 to come along, it feels good very happy with it.
Wow, an amazing resto effort!!! Stunning result!!!!! I do not even ask about refoaming, that is above my sanity level, but how did you paint it? Water-based acrylic and an airbrush or enamel/lacquer spray-can? I want to try it, guys at boomboxery do it sometimes, but am worried about extra stiffness or, worse, peeling off disasters...
I meant the drivers that go inside - is that what you mean too? I also wonder if there's a part number for the screws that hold the speakers on. Perhaps you could consider selling me one from your spare? Heck, perhaps quote me for the speakers too, while you're at it...if you are interested in selling them [edit] I just noticed you're not the original poster - oh well :/
