Mighty nice music, Oswaldo...... Joe Williams is a jazz immortal, and this recording shows why. I've been collecting the Nak Reference Recordings for many years, superb offerings! Here's a bit of reference info regarding the Nakamichi Reference Recording Series, including booklet: http://www.angelfire.com/wi/blueswapper/nakrefcassettes.html Cheers......
I just purchased and received a Delos compact Disc version of Joe Willams' "Nothin' but the Blues" album. My plans are to compare the Delos digital original to the Nak Reference cassette version (which I believe is derived from original analogue tape recording). My curiosity is rising now..... Joe Williams - Nothin' But The Blues | Recording | Delos Music https://delosmusic.com/recording/joe-williams-nothin-but-the-blues/ Grammy Winner - Best Jazz Vocal Performance with Red Holloway & His Blues All-Stars If there is interest, I'll report on my findings in near future. Cheers, Bleusy
Ooh! Amazing! And I also have the LP of the same title so this could be a triple shootout! Lol Anyway, keep us posted. Incidentally is your copy of the Joe Williams / Nak tape Dolby B, or Dolby C? Oz
Well, the version I have is recorded with Dolby C noise reduction. Nevertheless, its an aged cassette, the labels on the cassette fell off while playback a few weeks ago !!! Sounds as good as when I first played that many years ago. The Delos Master Series compact disc on playback is absolutely phenomenal. Cheers, Bleusy ************
Re: Recent Observations and Results: Comparing the Delos/Joe Willams album (Delos compact disc to Nak Reference Series Cassette - Nak ZX-C w Dolby C utilized), I can detect a slight difference. Not really degradation in my opinion, just slightly less vivid. Now, most recently, I recorded from the compact disc, to TDK MA-EX (Metal, Type IV formula), without any noise reduction pre-emphasis. In both cases, playback and record, Nak ZX-9 deck was utilized. Comparison of digital to home recorded with my aging ears seems very, very close. Of course, high quality cassette tape and highest quality, well-tuned deck recording gear makes the difference nearly indistinguishable, even after all these years passing. Cheers and best regards, Oz, Bleusy ************
Yeah but do you have the vinyl version??? I bet that would provide another very compelling rendition if played back on a reference level turntable/cartridge/phono-stage combination. And yes, I realize Delos especializad in digital recordings but no matter. Their vinyl is amazing sounding and I have in fact favored it over their own CDs which make no sense, I know, but That’s how I hear it. I feel similarly with another renown digital label: Telarc. Their vinyl annihilate the CD version of the same title. True Story. And lastly, if you like this Joe Williams title then you’re going to absolutely LOVE the other Williams title on Delos called: Joe Williams & Friends June 1985: I Just Want To Sing I think it’s an slightly better sounding than “nothin’ but the blues”. It’s less dry and dynamics are more explosive. From time to time on “nothin’” it almost sounds like the SPLs are taken to the brink of near distortion. Cheers, Oz
This is another fabulous sounding Joe Williams album on Delos. Find the vinyl and marvel at both the performance and sonics.
Thanks for the additional info, Ozwaldo, I'm impressed. Listening to a preview recording of the album from the free youtuber archive..... Nice sounding, which will be even better sounding from compact disc or wax. Likely I won't hear the difference with my aging hearing acuity, so I'll seek the Delos compact disc version. William's had an all-star group of session players recording with him ..... Excellento !!! Joe promoted himself with exceptional style, don't you agree ? Merci Bleusy ************
Agreed! He seems to have been a super smooth cat! Lol Yeah that title on Delos wax is not that common and there’s nothing wrong with securing a copy in CD. Delos CDs are well mastered so it’s the next option. Good luck!
