Anyone in Hong Kong today and fancy a last minute walk through Aplui street market? I’m on the hunt for some bits and bobs
Well it was quite a trip. We started filming in Hawaii late October. A week off for Xmas, then relocated to Gold Coast Australia till mid April and then a week in Hong Kong. Hawaii didnt offer up anything other than a few pre recorded cassettes. Australia, again.... nothing. But fromjapan.co.jp became a “thing” for me with a good haul of Walkmans, another Sharp VZ-V2 and a good stash of Axia metal tapes. Hong Kong was actually a major let down. Besides a Chance encounter in an old shop that led to a big box of Sony Metal ES-60’s.... nothing of note. Great shops packed floor to ceiling with vintage components.... but no portables worth anything. Just all modern day cheap stuff. I had to console myself with a few headphone amps and a swish pair of AKG N-90Q’s. Granted, I was there to work so very little downtime. So literally ran through Aplui street and Sim City. Hardly ideal. But it’s my success with FromJapan’s website that has ignited a spark in me, so Japan is next on my list. Just need to find a film that will be headed that was soon ;-)
What were you filming? Were you around the forum when Arkay used to talk about his adventures in Hong Kong? Every few days he'd find large boxes considered grails anywhere else. His stories were pretty detailed but he never talked about the actual locations and there was never a single photo. He ended up over at audiokarma.org moving up to stereo equipment, still talking about once in a lifetime finds every week. He was partially helped when the big German Collector, with the wall of boxes, went down there and confirmed he was telling the truth, together they found one of the early Sanyo Grails and a Marantz Micro System. How is the store doing, the link just goes to the dormat blog. I was at our local shop, I can't go in there with money, too much good stuff.
I’ll upload a few pics soon. Nothing majorly exciting. Godzilla Vs King Kong. Release date 2020. It’s the sequel to Kong Skull Island from two years ago and Godzilla King Of Monsters released next week (I believe). I wouldn’t write of Hong Kong for grail finds... I just had very limited time to explore. The blog is indeed just a holding page. Facebook.com/analogueoctoberrecords is the main portal for now
Very cool. I'm hoping to hunt down some cassettes and Walkmans in Singapore and Malaysia later this year.
