Hi everyone, I wonder if people have any experience of the following problem, and what some possible causes/explanations might be... pictures attached

It's a good quality mini-system component dating from about 1981. I bought it a few years ago, replaced the belts (and everything else is original), and had it playing nicely (along with the matching pre & power amps and tuner) up until it was stored away about a year ago. I've just brought it out again to use and I found that inserting a tape into the unit and pressing play causes the following:

    - L/H channel plays fine, level LED's operating as they should, but R/H channel has the LED's permanently at the max. This happens whether the unit is connected to an amp or left disconnected.

    - when connected to an amp and speakers, the L/H channel plays fine (I checked this with R/H RCA disconnected), but when the R/H is also connected, I'm only getting what I can describe as a loud and fast-pulsing buzzing noise coming from the R/H speaker.

I took the outer casing off just in case there was some sort of simple ground related issue, but no change.

Any thoughts on what potential causes and remedies might be? I'm not all that technical but happy to have a go at anything, with care, if pointed in the right direction (-:

    Many thanks

I'd start simple and try a known working tape, then play with the "Tape Selector" buttons, I have a feeling one of them is sticking, check if you can get the LED's to move when you engage them. If your not familar with DeOxit it might be a good product to use to clean the switch contacts and the rotary dial. I don't think it's related but since the cover is off I'd also look over the wiring to the RCA Jacks, these can break or weaken when the interconnects are pulled out, they may look connected but the wire might just be sitting on the broken solder joint, causing some of the scratchy sounds.

Most of this equipment just suffers from bad belts and sticky, corroded switch assemblies. I've got an L1M and L22, neither have that very interesting tape switch set up.

All sorted thanks - repetitively depressing record/play, stop, repeat etc got it working again, though some deoxit sounds from the research I’ve done like an excellent product to buy to help in future - thanks.

Now I have both system 22 and system 30 up and running, all looking mint, together with the correct SC-E22v speakers for these systems.

Dear Chestnut, AIWA SD-L30 has a 10 pole changeover slider switch equipped with flat cable linkage to right hand side of tape mechanism. This is nominally SW1 on the schematic. This switches the tape deck between record and playback modes. Buzzing on a channel and full scale Vu meter deflection symptom indicates this slider switch is dirty or has worn out contacts. It is very difficult to find a replacement as seems to be a custom made part, however you could opt to clean it with some spray solvent like tuner clean and work it out a little, else painstakingly de-solder it, open up, replace contacts from another slider switch and re-assemble. had the same issue with both my SD-L30 decks and solved.
