I just recently replaced the belt on my Walkman cause the sound kind of sounded bad so I went ahead and replaced it and while I did I found to things left hub and it’s spring came out and I have no idea how to put it back and my cassette head looks crooked but I’m not sure if it’s supposed to be like that and maybe it wasn’t the belt but the head? Does anyone know if it is and is it easy to fix and also is the tape head being crooked normal and if not is that easy to fix?Ive included photos above of what I’m talking about to give a better understanding. Thanks for reading!
I'm guessing but it looks like the spring goes on first, then the hub and a very small circlip on the top while pressing down the hub. It looks like your missing the circlip. I don't have this model but it looks like the head moves with the cover, they usually have two screws holding them down, if it is crooked you may be able to adjust those.
I’m not sure the tape head has these screws because I can see them. I tried leveling it so it’s straight and I guess it sounds good but I can’t tell because every time I play a tape the pinch roller now eats the cassette in less than 5 seconds but not much to wear there is any real damage to the cassette but at the same time the hub is still broken and I’m playing it with the broken hub. Now that i think of it it only eats it after it automatically auto reveses and I’m not sure why it does. Is it the pinch roller that’s the problem or the hub not being tight in place. I also have no idea how to get this circlip your talking about and if I can how would I fix it. Would it be easier taking it to an expert?
Your probably not getting the proper tension from the missing hub. Here's what Harbor Freight sells, they may be too big for you application, you might need to get a cheap Walkman and use it for parts. Does it look like there's one on the top of the other hub? https://www.harborfreight.com/300-piece-e-clip-assortment-67653.html
I looked back over the photos and see the head cocked down, is it loose? I checked old threads and both Tster and Cassette2go have this model, maybe they'll chime in.
So if they are friction fit how would I go about fixing the hub if I don’t need a circlip. Also I have no idea if the tape head is crooked or that’s how it’s supposed to look but my suspension is that It is crooked but first to even test it I have to fix the hub which the only parts I have are the spring and the hub it’s self. The metal spindle that’s supposed to fit in the middle move up and down and will go down if I try to put it where it connects to the hub.
I'm looking at your photo and it looks like the other hub has a metal insert that may have fallen out of your loose hub? Is the head loose, can you move it up and down on the lower side? If it doesn't move, I'd find the screw holding it down and adjust it. Most of my players are older 80's, the newer ones can be very compact, I was looking through some service manuals, this is the WM-F100, maybe yours is similar.
I think that metal insert your talking about is spindle that moves the hub. It’s still there as I said in the post above it just moves up and down. As for the tape head it doesn’t have any screws connected to it. I can simply move it up and down but it will always go back to looking crooked of that affects the sound I have no way of knowing until I fix the hub.
Head looks OK to me: it should be at an angle like that during Stop, FF or Rev and locks into place only during Play. Since you have one good hub, maybe take it out and compare to the one which fell off? Take a nice photo of the inside of the broken hub first, maybe this will tell you something?
Without consulting the manual or checking a similar mechanism directly, I think some sort of adhesive would be okay to re-stick the hub. Provided that you be VERY careful about the type you choose and its application, you definitely don't want any of it getting into the spindle bearing itself. You just need it to stick the plastic hub to just the tip of the metal axle. Generally speaking, though, I think you can get a quick test the walkman's sound in one direction even without one of the hubs fitted/only loosely fitted.
I’ve tried to test it without the hub in or just kind of in and the pinch roller always eats my tape so I don’t know if that’s another issue or just from the hub no being completely intact. I have no idea if I can even compare it with the other one cause I don’t want to break the other hub trying. I’m not sure I can put and adhesive because the metal spindle that’s supposed to be in the middle of the hub won’t go in and it gets pushed down. It’s supposed to be straight up but it just doesn’t.
In both directions of play? [QUOTE="Dusty Fats, post: 38759, member: 1488"because the metal spindle that’s supposed to be in the middle of the hub won’t go in and it gets pushed down. It’s supposed to be straight up but it just doesn’t.[/QUOTE] Oh, that is somewhat of a good sign I think. That means that the hole in the hub is not loose. But it also means you have to open up the walkman to reattach the hub, i.e. hold the bottom part of the metal shaft and press fit the hub back on.
I’m not sure I can do that as when I open the back of the Walkman it is covered with the motherboard and and the rubber band I really don’t want to mess with the motherboard . It has about three to four screws connecting it and one of the screws is really stubborn and doesn’t want to come out. Don’t know what to do about that.
Yeah, the board must be lifted to access the mechanism. That belt looks to be in bad shape too, I can see tears in the rubber.
To remove the board, some points must be desoldered. I think there are 11/12. With reference to the image: - 4 at the top right corner (2 tape, 2 ATS) - 3 near the negative battery terminal - 4 at the circumference of the motor - 1 on the positive battery terminal (I think this one's optional) But first, I think yo should check the manual here: https://freeservicemanuals.info/en/servicemanuals/viewmanual/Sony/WMEX670/WMEX672/ Those points are marked on page 3 You can get away with not unsoldering the head flex connector, just be careful to not break it. And just be careful overall as well, don't proceed if you're uncomfortable with it.
