I have just received a Sony WM -702 which I consider is an unusual find as the unit is a red one which is fully functional, It came with no accessories but I have these available when I can dig them out . It seems to be in full working order with some small dents on the back nd some others slight blemishes. Here are a couple of photos . Has anyone seen this colour before or have such a unit?
I don't have anything that new but I love red, I just have one old Sanyo that's red, the rest are standard issue.
I have seen this unit in black, light grey, polished red, and polished white. Very nice unit. I do believe that this is a model made when SONY was putting those problematic SMD caps in all of their stuff, so you should take a look at the capacitors inside to make sure no corrosion or leakage exists. Nice find, should clean up well.
Hi Recatcha I am not sure I am up to changing the capacitors . It was a leap of faith to open it up. At least the locking mechanism is not as bad as the 701c I am trying to rebels. See other link . The capacitors look pretty clean to me. Here Are 3 photos of inner unit Can you tell from it if they are Ok?
Welp, I can't see any corrosion in the pictures, so that's good. The inside looks to be very clean. This unit doesn't have a 'green button', so most likely, it was before Sony started using those problematic capacitors, so I'd say (as long as the unit is working fine), you are good!
Thanks Recaptcha That sounds reassuring I will do as you say. I thought I could not see any capacitors but I did not want to open the unit any further and as you say it looks clean Fingers crossed still awaiting pgt the belt. I shall attempt this one first as I do not have to replace the Spring lock as on 701C . Would a squirt of Deoxit be of any use anywhere ?
Yeah, if you are not confident about opening up the unit, it's best to stay away unless you absolutely have to, and right now I'm assuming the board is OK. That belt can be changed very easily without any more removal, so you should be fine there. Typically, you can use Deoxit for the volume dials and slider switches (Mega Bass, AVLS), but you should remove the board from the unit and take off the volume dial from the actual pot before attempting. I say that because electronics spray has a way of sometimes corroding plastic and damaging paint, so only spray on the board itself. Once again, great find! Hope this helps!
Elt arrived yesterday bur after installing coeeectly following picture nothing except a slight turni d the. Nothing and the two red lights at the top no longer light up I also has problems as the positive eatery cnnection move a bit but I got it back and the gum stick battery now fits in again. Also the button to open the unit fell out. I managed to get it back and it works when the unit is put together but falls out again when back unit is removed. Any thoughts
As far as the button to open the tape compartment, sometimes those aren’t really secure on the case unless the unit is closed and you have to just fiddle with it to get it back. As far as the belt goes. If it’s too tight then the motor could be too strained to run. Turn it manually to make sure it all freely turns. Also, run the motor without any belt on it to make sure it turns freely with no load. If the belt is not too tight, you could have bad capacitors, or a bad motor. did it have a belt before. Did it work with the old belt?
Thanks again. I will check the belt. I recall I testedit when it arrived with out a tape and the red lights came when you pressed play Ff and rewindAnd the tape cogs turned but when I put in a tape nothing turned when I pressed play Ff or rewind except the red lights worked as appropriate. Now they do not work and there is no movement when you press play.ff or rewind I will check the motor but the capacitors will be a bridge to far I am afraid. Thanks again but I am. Little disappointed as I took great care to rebel’s it
Yes, it can be very frustrating when projects sometimes don't turn out well. If you aren't getting any signs of life at all from the unit, check to make sure the gum stick is charged, and check the voltage by placing your multi-meter probes on where the battery terminals are connected to the board with the gumstick inserted. You mentioned the positive connection moved, it's possible a trace broke on the board. I really do think you aren't getting a decent battery connection.
Hi thanks again for all your help . I recharged the. Gum stick in the night and in the afternoon I did as you said and took the belt off and reinserted the gum stick to check the motor but it din not turn at all Itried again a couple more times. Then I decided to call it a day but first. I thought I would replace the belt so it would not get lost if I took it in for repair after The pandemic is over . There is an expert not too far away in Nelson Lancashire about 60 miles away .I have some units in now for repair but it takes time as he has a lot on . I was about to put the lid back on when I gave it one more go and lo and behold when I reinserted the gum stick it came back to life. Do not ask me how, I did nothing to it. I have put it all back together save one screw on the back and played a cassette in it and it played fine with FF and REWIND working as well. There is some wow and flutter but I am happy it is back up and running again. Thank you for all your help throughout Recaptcha .Philp Ps now for the 701c which also needs a new belt. Wait for Part 2 and the replacement of the opening mechanism!!!
The belt arrive to replace the old belt on the 701Cwhich had split.Iremoved all screws and also the locking mechanism and I had taped all the screws and pieces onto a sheet of paper for safekeeping. I replaced the belt and I was delighted to find that everything worked as it should Play FF /Rew. I then put the back unit in place and started to try to fix the locking mechanism which is in three pieces with lock spring and the outside screw .I looked at another unit I had and, after several attempts and some no little time I managed to attach the spring and lock in place .I then tried to put the back in place but it was not easy as you need to hold the lock in place to get the lid on and thiis took several attempts and removal of the back piece several times as the black plastic bits for the battery adaptor kept falling out as they were quite lose .. Atlast, I managed to do this and I tried to test play again before I put all the screws back. This time nothing happened. Also the lock mechanism was in place but it would not lock and unlock . I then noticed that there was a small piece of the wiring unit sticking out the back through which one of the back screws has to go. I took off the back and then I saw that to my horror the wiring had split as well just before where the screw enters the hole .I presume this is why the unit no longer operated .I am very disappointed as I took a lot of care . Can anyone give me any suggestions as to if and how I can repair this damage and also get the lock to work properly as I cannot see anyway to attach it to the switch on th e outside front panel to open the and to get it to snap shut I attach two pictures showing the damage to the wiring
