Hi! I was lucky enough to bag a Sony Walkman WM-EX670 for spares or repairs on eBay for £17. Chucked a new belt in it and its working smooth. I'm really happy with the sound on this thing but wondering if there's any other way to improve the sound quality, even more, perhaps replacing a capacitor or two? I appreciate that most of the PCB is surface mount but there's a few bigger caps that could perhaps be replaced. Also, you can see from the attached image that the metal casing has been subject to a lot of wear over the years it seems with some scratches. Is it possible to buff these out in any way? It feels like aluminum finish with no paint. Any guidance here would be greatly appreciated.
There's a lot of things I'd also look at before doing surgery, are you using prerecorded cassettes or are you making them yourself? I've got a selection of tapes going from crappy to nice, if they all sound muffled than I know it's my deck. I posted a website somewhere on here that has different HZ tones, could you record those onto a good tape and then see what your player is playing? I haven't had time to fine tune my equipment but I try to come up with ideas on how I would do it once I get a chance. If this is a late 90's model, the caps are probably fine unless there's a known issue that some of them have. Here's the owner's manual for the WM-EX672 https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/res/manuals/3864/38648861M.pdf
That's a decent technique. I should do the same. Yeah I assumed that pre-recorded tapes would sound good and (as I'm sure you'll know) I was horrifically mistaken. So i'll be recording my own from here on out. I've got a Chicago album recorded on a type II that sounds insane so I'll use that as a reference tape for now. Thanks for the link to the manual that's very handy. Yeah you're for sure right about the caps. Do you know if it supports different tape types and works it out automatically? Thanks!
Hi there, The EX67x series has ATS. Automatic Tape Sensor. IMO it’s the best Walkman you can get. Enjoy the Revitalise function too (RV): it does miracles with old tapes. Cheers!
