Recently I got Sony WM-4 from ebay. As soon as I got it, I've done some maintenance - change belts, cleaning capstan and pinch roller, adjusting speed, and refinishing capstan (it was too shiny). After that, it can plays cassette little bit wobbly, but well enough to enjoy, except rewind. It seems rewinding post is little stuck, but I'll eventually figure out how to fix it. But real problem is stop button. Functionally, it works perfect, but every time press stop during play or winding, there are loud popping sound - sounds like "POP!". Turn volume down to 0 is no use. It's too annoying, but I can't figure out what can cause this kind of problem. If it's mechanical reason, I could fix it. But if it's electrical problem, I think I have to hunt down another WM-4 for parts. Does anyone have such annoying popping sound with stop function?
Hi Kamome. I have a wm-4 that I bought back in 1982. I have never heard of that particular problem on the wm-4. At the end of tape it should automatically shut off. Does yours? Is it the correct belt? I would recommend not using cue/review on this model because there is a small plastic part that fails and I'm not sure if it is repairable. The wm-4 is still one of my favourites- powerful headphone out. Sorry, have not been much help but welcome to the forum. Lots of experts on here so I'm sure someone e will respond to your problem.
I've had a similar issue and I know there's several threads on the web about it, the easiest answer I've seen is over on TapeHeads, clean the rollers (for any particles) and demagnitize the head. I'd start here to make sure it isn't something easy.
