    Hi all,

I discovered my old (but in good condition) SONY PRO WALKMAN which is the WM-D6C version. I cleaned up the corrosion on the battery terminals got it working again and found the sound quality is absolutely superb...I was just getting into playing my 4th or 5th track and heard a slight bang in the earphones at which point the sound now only comes out of the left ear! I was soooo loving hearing it but just cannot listen to it in one ear! Any ideas on what might have happened and whether I should even attempt to investigate given its a valuable and great quality machine...I'm happy to poke around in other Walkmans but unless this is a simple fix perhaps I'm better sending it somewhere? If so where?

    Hi all,

I forgot to mention that if I pull the headphone jack slightly out of the socket I get audio in both ears...whether this is true stereo or simply doubling up of one side (either left or right signal) is another question entirely

Hopefully it's something easy like like a wire came off the speaker jack but make sure you also check with a known working tape and also check that the headphones didn't go bad.

Speaker jacks took a lot of abuse and the wires wiggle loose on the inside, the service manual has been posted on here before but it most likely needs to be opened up.

Thanks Mister X...ive tried several different tapes and two different very good quality headphones. I hadn't thought it might be something as simple as a loose wire as I feared it might be a surface mount component that would need re-soldering on the PCB...something I'm happy to experiment with on other Walkmans but not this one...However, if it is a loose wire I could confidently resolder that...I actually have the manual and original box so I'll have a look and see if it looks easy or a nightmare to open the walkman case up.

Have you tried to use the line-out? To try and narrow it down to headphone socket or something else. Personally i never use the headphone socket as i use a headphone amp from the line-out.

Thanks too cool. Yes I’ve listened to the line out socket and the audio still only plays on one earphone so perhaps it’s something on the PCB which is blown?

Most of the time it's either the headphone jack but since you've tried out the line-out, it's probably not that, sometimes its the volume slider, I think you should use Faderlube, not DeOxit to clean sliders. Here's Arkay's Guide, he used to be a proficiant poster on here in the old days. Confirm the cleaner before using, nickeccles cleans a lot of boxes, find his threads and see what he's using over there if you can't find Faderlube or DeOxit (made by the same company). You'll probably have to open it up and do some cleaning anyway. If anything doesn't want to come apart, don't force it, there's always a hidden bolt or retainer that you don't want to break.

Thanks mister X. Perhaps I could have a look at it myself...I’ve just been quoted average £180 for someone else to service/repair it which I’m sure is a fair price given their experience etc but since Im unable to work and running out of money like many others perhaps there is a greater need for me to at least try and investigate it...can I ask though...is deoxit absolutely essential over using my existing can of servisol super 10 switch contact cleaner? I see deoxit is very expensive so unless it is wildly different to my existing servisol super 10 perhaps I could use it in the same way?
