After posting scans of all the CD "Discmen" from the 2002 Argos Catalogue I thought I the MiniDisc fans would like to see what was on offer for them.

I have a large gap in my scans collection from 2003 to 2007 but feel 2002, was when there was the biggest selection of formats and players.

Interestingly you had a good choice of Pay as you Go mobile phones for £70 each back then. As MP3 players were significantly more expensive than Mobile Phones back then I wonder why they are now now called Smartphones rather than SmartMP3players.

Those are from the Retromash Site http://retromash.com/argos/

His collection only goes up to 1999. Great for Boomboxes but less so for MiniDisc

This was my most recent purchase and explains the gap

I might actually have the missing ones as physical paper copies, having decided to stop throwing them away a decade or so ago.
I find it fascinating to see how something like a Digital camera goes from being the latest £400 gadget to something you find for 50p at a car boot sale in less than twenty years.

We might be the last generation that wanted to do things better and faster. Competition was king but obsolescence was junk. It's still hard to for me to want to buy some of the old stuff, I just past by a Nikon AE-1 with a ton of accessories for $10 USD, those were the king of the hill in the 80's and they're still a engineering marvel.

I think you might be proved wrong when the PLaystation 5 launches. I have read a couple of times that gaming is bigger than the music and movie industries combined. However, if Google's plans work out the Playstation 6 might be super-ceded by a streaming service to something like a Chromecast.

Also in the news recently is speculation that we have passed "Peak Smartphone". To me, who a a teen, spent over a weeks wages on a calculator, it seems obvious that will happen at some point.

The question is what will the next big thing be. I'm still waiting for a C3PO type robot.

Closer to reality, and back to streaming, what does seem to have happened is a shift to the subscription type services. If you subscribe to Sky TV they install and give you the equipment for free. If you cancel at the end of the 18 month contract you lose 80% of the functionality.

Since we're going towards full computerization, I'd say a small wearable computer that gives suggestions and makes comments while you walk, talk, work, etc. This unit with cloud access would know everything and make sure your bills are paid, you've talked to all of your friends and much more. No need for games systems any more, you'd carry around an all-purpose joy stick, kind of like a mouse, that would do tasks with your tactile input, and stream any game you wish...

Oh, man... seeing all those desktop stereos makesme think of two things:

    1) The first time I saw the like... on a shelf at Fry's Electronics, and...

    2) Lacking a handle a battery compartment aside, hiw little they differ from a boombox.

    You just reminded me of....:

    £259 wow! :noway:

I had that MZ-N1 Net Minidisc model back in the day - they still look like James Bond gadgets to me - wonderful design and engineering. I didn't pay that for it though - I had an older model stolen and the insurance claim allowed me to upgrade!

Went out jogging today with a MZR-E62 which still works well and sounds great - I got it for £30 new as sony had a deal if you bought one of their full size recorders
