About a month ago I found this Sony Wm-20 walkman on ebay as non-functional and for spare parts ... these days I have dedicated myself to bringing it back to life ... I don't put all the photos otherwise I will fill the server ... First cleaning of the liquefied belt ... replaced ... then electrical problems to make it restart or at least see the motor turn ... replacement of the gear wheel ... total mechanical cleaning and lubrication ... and finally after having assembled it to try it ... as I press play it goes to a stop .... I disassemble the whole part of the keys and head again and I find the spring mounted on the pinch roller off-site ... now everything is ok ... Aesthetically it is not perfect with a few strokes and lines here and there the..but it works well and feels good ... I would like to fix it a little aesthetically ... remove some imperfections ... I accept any advice you can give … Grazie Thanks
Thanks autoreverser Boodokhan I solved it .. and it was replaced with a spare one .. sent to me by tomtom87
Ah I see .. for the lines , hate to say it , but anything I have tried made them only worse as this is plain sandblasted (?) aluminum. For the stokes though (your first photo) I have successfully managed to make them almost invisible using the curved back of a preferably wooden pencil and pushing the strokes from the opposite side on hard flat surface . And what a coincidence , there is a wm-20 in my work bench right now so here is what I mean with pictures.
Looks great! good job. I had this issue with that pinch roller on a WM-W800 a few months ago its not that easy to find.
Excellent work! I'm impressed you dismantled it so thoroughly! That was a lot of defects you found. Lucky to get the spare main gear for it. Mine is cracked but only in one place and it's 1 tooth spacing so I plan to glue it. I found the aluminium case to be quite soft so it's possible to push those dents out. I think the scratches are ok, it's a lovely old Walkman after all.
yes i love these models .. wm 10 -20 -30 ... i have 2 wm 30 one red and one black ... they are both to be repaired ... the black one is worse than yours ... it has a corroded body and I'm working on it .
hi @Silver965 I have sony wm w800. There were speed variations in deck A. After opening up I found that the spring beside the roller was out of its place and was touching the roller (it is shown in your pic #016). I tried to put it back in the notch of the plastic lever. But it came out again. Can you tell me what is the purpose of the plastic lever & spring ?
Ciao the spring is used to hold the black lever in the right position ... if it is not in place ... the lever moves and stops playing the tape .... I am attaching other photos of the mechanism ... the lever is mounted in so that it is free inside the gear and a pin ... if the lever stops in front of that pin the mechanism clicks
Hello, I have sony wm-w800 with the same problem with plastic gear.Is it possible to find one or two pieces? Also my front door for deck A is damaged.
If you are referring to the plastic wheel, image 007, it has not been repaired but replaced and at the moment I have no others available.
