Hello to all! This is my first post (except for my introduction), so I’d like to say hello to all of you, and to thank you for the huge amount of information that I learned during my “forum reading” time. This is the story of my recently acquired Sony WM-DD1. I won an eBay auction here in Italy for that Walkman, for €45, so not bad at all, and I planned about restoring it. I replaced the capstan idler wheel, the belt and the SMD electrolytic caps, and, man, this little humble machine SINGS! I know that there are Walkmans with better heads, better electronics, quartz locked drive, etc, but I’m really happy about the sound of my DD1. Now, for the stupid part. You know, when you get too confident in doing something, you pay less attention about it, and, often, you do stupid things. Well, I did it. I got quite good in dismantling and reassembling that machine, until this morning, when I broke both the switches for Dolby and Tape Type while putting the rear part back. Yes, I did not check the position of the selectors on the cover, and I broke the shafts of the switches. To be honest, the Tape Type one was not so stable even before, but now it's completely broken. (Pics attached. The shafts seem good but they're not, sadly) Now, the question is: where can I find that kind of microswitches? I have a WM-2091 at my parents’ house, that I’m restoring (very slowly), so if they are the same I could borrow them, but I’d like to find new ones and replace them. Except for this issue, the DD1 is working well. The only thing that I still have to do to complete restoring is setting the azimuth with my test tape, precisely check speed and adjust the motor position screw to minimize flutter, that's still noticeable. Thank you for reading! Greetings from Italy Lorenzo
The only way to find those parts would be to buy a broken unit and take the parts from them. If you can't find the parts, you can always pre-set the switches to the cassettes and Dolby type you mainly use before re-assembly.
Thank you for your reply. Well, I think I'll wait for some donor machine, then. I'll check whether the WM2091 that I own has the same switches. Thanks! Lorenzo
I think its you lucky day, I have a board for spares (I only used the big white plastic switch) en some caps are missing. They switches are in great condition, please contact me if interested
