    Hi all,

Recently came into possession of one of these and the condition is incredible, even coming with the original purchase receipt from 1987.

The person I got it off last used it in around 1998/1999 so it’s been sat in it’s box for over 20 years.

While it does work it seems to suffer from the Disc Drive Click and is also quite fluttery. I do also own a Walkman DDII with a cracked cog and the performance caused by the crack on that machine has never really resulted in a fluttery sound, it still sounds excellent. However, does seem that the clicking on the DC-2 is much louder than on my DDII, so I suppose it’s possible the cog in the DC-2 has cracked worse in two places or perhaps more.

Just wondering as the DC-2 is a much more sophisticated machine if there’s more to go wrong with the transport?

The pinch roller on the DC-2 seems quite nice and grippy, but it was pretty discoloured at first and looked a bit like marble. Given it a bit of a wipe and that residue seemed to go quite quickly.

I have just bought Marian replacement plastic drive cog and reel gear off his eBay store, previously ordered a stainless steel one but was advised elsewhere to cancel this as isn’t real suitable to install in such a machine.

hopefully these will be the main fix, but I just wondered if there is anything else I should look out for on this particular model which can also affect wow and flutter performance. I have seen on Walkman Archive these are meant to be excellent systems being Quartz locked and from the professional range should sound much better than a standard DDII.

The sound levels and amplification everything seems to be spot on, just this annoying flutter which isn’t present on my current DDII.

Also to note if I hold the machine upright and tilted slightly to the right most of the flutter does seem to dissipate, pretty much.

Nice unit, Stop using your DDII till you get the gear fixed. If you keep using the DDII, you will wreck the adjacent gears.

The rubber capstan tyre is the other thing that could cause flutter if it has degraded over the years. Might be worth purchasing a replacement to have to hand when you are opening this up to replace the center gear. Looks like a lovely unit, and very cool to have the paperwork!

I never use my DDII, just sits on my shelf next to my Discman, Minidisc and 20th Anniversary Walkman from 1999.

The portable machine I use most of all is a 1982 Technics RS-M1.

was just seeing how the DDII compared to the DC2, very briefly.
