Does anybody know something about this tape? Somehow google doesnt help much I ordered one, not for colecting, but for using, so i wonder how it sounds, on label they say " ampex will replace this product without charge if it doesnot perform to your satisfaction" so seems wery proud of this product, so strange that i cant find anny user review.
Whell maybe this will be first user review on ampex grand master. After sort test, i was satisfacted I mean, i have two head deck, so dont play with record level, i recorded on +3 sometimes +5 without dolby, song for testing "twist my sobriety-Tanita Tikaram" for db difrence and chrisp higths. And it was amayzing, i would say they know what they talking about For this day this is my best tape by far, well my tapes isnt something interestis or hq, so this beats them easy. And something interesting in jcard
Maxell and TDK were everywhere over here, Ampex never took off even though they were there from the beginning. I've got a few NOS but they're mid-70's so I don't know how the rate. I have a few Ampex Grand Master II C-60s that I purchased many, many years ago (like 1978). I recollect the Ampex GM offerings were competitively priced with Maxells and TDKs. Note that these GMs from late 1970s were manufactured in the USA !!! That was when I mostly favored and grabbed 12 packs of Maxell UDXL Is and IIs. Those Ampex Grand Masters were okay, but for me lost full fidelity after 10+ years. Still have those cassettes in the basement vault, but haven't played for 30+ years. Not necerely same story, but grand master 2 is chrome tape, mine is ferro. I also have tdk optima 1 and 2, and for some reazon optima 1 sounds warmer for me.
Hi Tadasas, I recollect that I purchased just one Ampex Grand Master I C-60 back during 1978, and found that to be an inferior performer to Maxell and TDK Type I's. Of course, that's just my opinion ..... Just want to mention that Maxell UDXL Is and IIs ruled the blank cassette tape scene when I lived in Chicago, IL USA (1977 - 1980). Stacks of 12 pack boxes on the shelves of many stores back then. No so many Ampex or Scotch brand cassettes. Those were the days, when I was in my mid twenties and often roaming around the music shops on North Clark St. in Chi-Town !!! Cheers, Bleusy
