I've been watching the member count for the last few years and membership has been exploding the last few weeks with over 1000 new members. Does anybody know how it works, we seem to go up, then some will get taken off, then count will continue to add more. Anyway, it looks like a good sign for the hobby, I think AO is the only original moderator still on the forum, it would be interesting if he could recall the peak membership from the golden age around 2008.
Hey people. I seem to recall it being around 10,000 back in the day but only a tiny percentage ever engaged regularly (less than 1%). Could be a number of reasons for sudden jump.... 1. I've had a lot of new members to my Facebook page recently and a lot of users cross-polinate from there to here and vice versa. 2. Admins on this site are lazy and only process new member applications sporadically. 3. Huge phishing incentive from Panama to harvest fake bitcoin via the vintage walkman and boombox community.
I was going to say Spambots, like we have been having so many problems with recently. Looking at the "members online in past 4 hours" there is something strange going on. I would normally expect to see Avatars in at least 75% of the entries. Today there are far more than usual and about 80% are blank. p.s. I just had a look and all the new members seem to be "Age 35 from Russia" or 'Age 36 from Ethiopia". Too much of a coincidence to be genuine members. I suggest @walkman archive has a good look at the server records. If the site is getting hacked (again) we are in good company. One of this mornings headlines was about Microsoft getting hacked.
4356 and still going up. AO do you have the Stereo2go Facebook Page? I've been posting some cool stuff on AudioKarma, who knows maybe they're coming over here looking for something different? I love AK but it's getting huge, your thread is buried within minutes.
I manage these groups in Facebook pages, which is part of the reason why I am not in here too much presently. My job transporting the handicapped 'me now - my left foot toes were cut off by the VA 14 months ago' and others 5 days a week is quite enduring. 1. There's a huge amount of new members with a name and four numbers, they are all 45 and from Russia, sweet!
