Hello Retlor, it could be several different issues, just like if a car isn't running properly. I usually start by cleaning the insides with isopropyl alcohol and making sure nothing is stuck in the tape path. Next you might have to open it up and check the belt condition. If possible get on Amazon and order JIS screwdrivers, they will keep you from ruining the screws and never getting it open.

My Mate Vince repairs a lot of Walkmans on YouTube, he has a great way of opening them up and troubleshooting issues but he's not an expert on repair or electronics, just the skills and desire to fix broken things.

Hi Retlor and welcome to Stereo2Go,
I would start by checking the belt. The WM-9 dates from the early 1980s. If the belt is original it will need to be replaced since it will have stretched. It is also worth replacing the pinch roller at this stage as the rubber will have gone hard, if it is original.
You will need to clean the tape path as Mister X suggests, including cleaning the head and the capstan.
