My Sony CFD-5 with builtin Cd player which looks like a D-50 skips with copied cd's when cold.
I use an original cd it is fine but still skips a little bit for the first few minutes when plays perfect.
Depending on the ambient temp can take about 30 min to 1 hour of playback on an original cd to then work fine with a copied cd. Do I need to replace the caps in the cd player or might it be the laser?

Interesting I do have a D-50 which works with every cd great from the start.

Have you tried cleaning and lubricating the rails the laser slides on? That is one of the most common problems with CD players that use that type of mechanism (Japanese and most since the 1990s).

What do you recommend to lubricate the rails with?

Personally I have used the grease sold for use on Radio Control cars on the basis that it should be safe to use on plastics.

Thanks for the info, I do have some Tamiya white plastic grease.

But it seems I have fixed it purely by accident. I had pressed down on the cd door and my copy cd started to play fine hmm.
Removed the cd and pressed play then could hear the magnet in the top of the door was rubbing like it was bottoming out.
I used a plastic pry tool to lever the spindle motor up slightly on one side and then the magnet now spins without freely.
Looks like the cd was slipping when spinning up.
    happy days.! thanks
