I have Sony MDR-51 headphones where the tube holding the cables got pulled out or shrunk so it isn't attached to the headphone anymore, see picture. Does anyone know how to open the headphones? I want to attach the tube again but I am afraid to damage the headphones.

I am not sure if this is the right forum or if this should go into the Tech Talk area?!

I think it is tech talk, although the best idea maybe is to download a manual for the 51. It is surely one of the most beautiful Sony lightweight on ear from the golden age. Good luck :)

I figured that the tube didn't slip out the plastic but it broke. Tape is the solution ...

Sorry to hear, maybe you'll find a broken piece on ebay for parts.

Can anybody list replacement pads they had success with? Preferably an Amazon link. Thanks!

Hey, I think any 40-45mm earpads will do. Just bought 40mm foams for my MDR-62, and they fit just perfectly. The 51 and the 62 has the same sized driver for sure.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/402783518687 - I bought these, just good for the 62.

No probs, it just fits for the 62, I hope the 51 will take it too.

I mainly wanted to fix this in a proper way to protect the cable as I was afraid that it get's pulled out completely. But tape is fine, it does the job.

I clean everything I aquire pretty thorough but I am not against wear and tear on devices and I mostly see it as patina. It only shows that the device already had a life and in most cases I think it adds to the particular device. :delighted:

I completely agree, as I'm too a collector who uses everything. Some patina is all right - the main thing is to have a working earphone :)

Very much agree with your statement. It is great to have nice Walkmans in your collection stored in a box. Even better: on a shelf so you can see them often and occasionally pick them up. Best: use them!

Definitely! Especially that these fantastic guys even sound better than what are mostly sold today. :)
