    Greetins,

I hope this is the proper place to ask this question.

I would like to buy a cassette player. I had one when I was a teenager, it must have disappeared when I went to CD and digital.

I would like to buy one. I do not listen to a lot of music. I am not an audiophile, But I want to listen to some music maybe once a week. Mostly I would listen to audiobooks.

The look is of the walkman (cassette player) is important to me; Therefore, I do not want to buy a sports walkman

Audio quality is somewhat important at least to the point of what I saw in this video from anadialog, I do not want to buy the amazon products

My budget is at most 60 Euro (82 USD) (103 CAD) and this is excluding shipping which can go from 15-30 CAD. I live in Canada.

I want to limit the amount of maintenance I would need to do unless it is really simple. Unfortunately a man can only have so much time for new hobbies, I have too many hobbies.

Obviously I am wondering if I should buy the mistik for 69 EURO + it would cost me 25 euro shipping

I also am thinking of the Sony Walkman EX series which looks wise are somewhat okay, and some aiwa looks fine too.

Obviously I cant afford these but aesthetic wise I love this looks

Please what should I buy? should I buy the Mystik? unfortunately I saw many post anticipating but I saw no one except ana(dia)log giving a full review of the product, especially after release? did somebody review it. Many people say the product is not good and is plastic?

What should I buy within my budget 103 Canadian dollars (70euro)

The Mystik never met it's funding goal, it's probably dead, I wouldn't hold much hope for the other model either and it will require headphones. All of these new models seem to be using the same version internals, they just put a different shell over it, the consensus is there's 2-7 manufacturers making the internals and none seem better than the low-end stuff we had in the 80's.

I'd put a wanted thread in the bottom section, members will either put something up for sale or might offer you one privately. Personally I have a few dozen models that are considered middle-of-the-road, I was getting them for a dollar or two and couldn't resist but most are boxed away in storage, models like the Sanyo M-G36D are still around $30 on ebay but may require a belt to work properly. Most of these Sanyo's had a vinyl case so they're in pretty good condition today but I always expect to do a belt change. They are a little more boxy than the models you linked to but back in the 80's smaller was also much more expensive.

It’s no good asking anyone about what you should buy, everyone has a different opinion.
Find whatever you can get your hands on to try, only you know what you like and only you have to like it.

If you are only going to use it once a week, is it even worth the effort? Just use whatever you have now a phone ect.

I understand, I suppose, I am asking because I don't know what is good for a certain budget. I have so many hobbies that all of them I do once a week hehe. What do you think of WeAreRewind https://www.wearerewind.fr/product-page

One thing for sure, I am glad I saw this youtube video because I feel I would have waisted money if I bought what was on amazon. hence why I am asking for suggestions for those who know

Thank you TooCooL4 I did not find this forum in my google search :). I suppose I might have phrased my question wrong. My question should have been What are a list of Cassette players that I can buy within my budget (70 euro/ 100 canadian) abd Mistik being in that price range, would it be worth it. Especially if I am still learning about the hobby and whether maintenance might be too much effort unless it is quite simple, I do open a few electronics here and there for small small fixes or clean ups but rarely.

I can’t advise you on what to buy, since I am quite particular in what I like and what I like are not in that price range. Also what I like may not be what you like. You just have to take a gamble and go for it.

If you want new, I think most are in your price range but judging by the reviews and cassette mechs available, they are built with equipment that was considered entry-level back in the 80s-90s. Something like a 80's Sanyo, while not high end, should be fairly easy to rebelt and use and give much better sonics then new offerings. The We Are Rewind unit looks like another dud, there just isn't enough interest for another entry-level unit, these guys never get the funding. Urban Outfitters has a few on their website, they might be a good source.

I checked out a few of the new models two years ago in Japan but they really basic and you'll wonder what all the "cassette" hype is about.

So you want something cheap to listen to some old audiobooks.

My advice would be to look around locally and only spend half your budget.
Buying a genuine Walkman nowadays is like buying a used car.
What is a fair price will heavily depend on condition and whether it works properly.
Later models are also less likely to have problems, especially as many were bought
"just in case I want to listen to my old cassettes" when people had already switched to
    Discmans or even MP3 players.

I would suggest that a player advertised as working is worth over twice one that is "spares or repair" or untested (which usually means the same thing), and even more if you actually had the opportunity to try the unit before handing over cash.

I started a thread about The last tape Walkmans
    http://stereo2go.com/forums/threads/the-last-tape-walkman-s.5362/
Having a quick look at what is available on eBay.co.uk I would recommend this one if you were in the U.K.
    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/373658675104?epid=58115146&hash=item56ffcae7a0:g:ptQAAOSw6XBg-zDr&LH_BIN=1
Look at the associated product reviews.

I have bought a couple of the models from before this one and they are now getting so old they have had problems which weren't as simple as changing a belt.

On the subject of belts, players I have had from new have needed new belts after twenty years.
I wouldn't recommend Panasonic players for a beginner as the belts can be very difficult to change.

The thing to realise about the Mystik and RTM machines is that they are only as good as the mechanisms they are built around which are usually available in cheaper machines such as this one.
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Reshow-Cas...jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==

With over 6000 reviews you can get a good idea of the performance although I suppose like with any product a few people got a duff one.

Now for my review on that unit, based on the fact that I have just listened to the whole Now Dance 92 tape using one and decent headphones. It is Stereo and Auto-Reverse. Without Dolby things like cymbals sound a bit "splashy" but vocals sound surprisingly good.

Now for the point about shopping local. I paid £5 earlier this month for my unit in the local Charity shop.
boxed, looking brand new, but with batteries fitted so it literally worked straight out of the box.
As I suggested earlier most recent cassette players don't seem to have had much use. Maybe someone bought this one to transfer just one tape precious to them.

To my amusement the box still had attached a catalogue from 2009 showing the sort of
other items they think cassette users might be interested in.

Possibly my best buy ever for a cassette player (although I can beat it with a genuine Discman).

If you’re interested, I have a little Sony WM-EX522 that I would like to swap or sell. See my swap / for sale media album. In box with manuals, no headphones though. One advantage is that it takes one regular AA battery. According to the sticker on it, in ideal conditions it should keep playing for 35 hours one a single battery. Never tried it though, bought it as spare many years ago and stored it in its box from that moment onwards. From price or swap perspective it should for sure work out. Shipping costs might be something else, need to find out.

That is quite a good idea, once I get more knowledge and am ready I ought to advertise for buying

I read the article, thank you. Now I have a better perspective. It seems it is the same mechanism for most of the new one post 2010.

    This one looks decent indeed.

'The thing to realise about the Mystik and RTM machines is that they are only as good as the mechanisms they are built around which are usually available in cheaper machines such as this one.'
I see, I suppose the Mystik (Mulann) and the RTM it all depends how everything is packaged and rework but in the end I would be paying for the whatever improvement they added or worst case I would be scammed.

ANd Longman as a matter of fact I bought today a portable cassette player at my local Thright shop for less than 3 pounds. Unfortunately that was the only one available. And there was also 2 discmans.

It feels disgusting but I will give it a good scrubbing. I hope they work. I will use this Sanyo MGR-710 as a temporary walkman and for practice if I need to test how to change belts etc. Most likely I will buy the Mystik/Mulann. Once I get a lot more money and know more about cassettes, I will buy a Sony Walkman or aiwa from the 90s

Thank for, for the moment, I bought the Sanyo. I will most likely buy the Mulann Mystic in 2 or 4 weeks when I have some money in pocket.
