Hi all, Which Sony DD Series have identical Center Gear? I’m afraid I’ve warped my center gear arm while adjusting it after I’ve replaced the cracked CG. (The FF was not functioning, so I bent it up as suggested in the repair guide.) Thus, I’m looking for a replacement. If any of you has one, let me know. Thanks, ML PS Any one here has had to bend the CG arm because FF or RW didn’t not work or were grinding?
Please see my overview on the DD portables, check the column Center Gear. Here is the link: http://stereo2go.com/forums/threads...rview-contributors-and-reviewers-wanted.7410/ When there are 2 versions of this gear, I will update the column to reflect this. Let me know.
After more updates in that thread, there only seems to be one center gear version for the DD range. Note that some of the DD portables don’t even have this gear, like the cost reduced later versions. I’ve tried to capture all this in the overview and timeline, hope it helps and makes for easy to interpret overviews.
DD central gear is identical in all the models that have a central gear (DD9 doesn't have a central gear) WM-2 and WM-5 have central gear but not considered as DD , The central gear on WM-2 and WM-5 are identical.
My WM-2 and 5 (both high serial number range) have the exact same gear as DD. For WM-2 there also appears to be an early version with a thicker center gear - this is a different gear.
It is possible to place a DD gear in WM-2 or a WM-2 gear in DD walkman but It wont function appropriately. see the topic below to understand the differences between these 2 gears. http://www.stereo2go.com/forums/threads/central-gear-wm2-5-vs-other-dd-walkman.5097/#post-38120
Thanks for the information @Boodokhan . The gear in the linked thread does look different though. Find below a photo of the WM-5 with a broken DD gear next to it.
I won’t take the mechanisms of both Walkmans apart myself, that would result I total chaos. Perhaps the previous owner did install this gear. When I got the WM-2 the belt had failed, but the motor and LED were still working. The WM-5 is defective, the motor does not switch on using the buttons, but it does work when powered directly. However with both of them and cracked gears, given their importance to the DD family tree I would like to get them repaired, but I have not yet decided. With several other, better performing units, chances of using them when in good technical state are very slim.
