Techmoan features a modern Sound burger device, driven by a Pi-zero, in his most recent video.
Some hick-ups since it is an early production run of a crowdfunded device, nevertheless it looks promising.

Despite the pictures of the "Crocodile Burger" in an Audio Technica leaflet was only ever one Sound Burger.

However you are right that there have been many portable record players before and since. I am sure @CDV will like this one

While on this subject check out this video (from 10:00) where Techmoan uses a Crosley Sound Burger copy to improve the reproduction of some mini records.

Nice. The spindle mounting mechanism (what is the proper name of it?) is very similar to what portable CD players later have used. Not to mention the pickup, which is also on the bottom like on CD players.

Check out this Crown Portable Phono, the link was broken to the website. It's too bad all of these unique cool ones are super rare. I'd love to see somebody upgrade some of these with metal body parts, maybe some wood.

I found this little gem, the Naco TRPH 99 Super Midget, there's little information outside this photo from an old ebay listing.

Look closely by the tonearm and I think that is one of the ones with a "Disc Drive" mechanism which operates directly onto the underside of the record.

and a couple of Youtube videos.

Yep, that fricken rubber turns to glass, then it's time to figure out how to replace it or put sticky tape on it to get by. I'd be surprised if any of these older models were belt driven. I did just get a cool old 60's JVC portable TT and was greeted with belt driven mech. I don't think that was the norm back then.

I have seen those before on eBay as I regularly do a search for Panasonic SG.
It reminds me of a sandwich toaster or trouser press.
What is interesting is the way the tonearm is built into the lid.
    You can glimpse it here

I wonder if it was the SG-200 which inspired t5he famous Technics SL-10, which with a linear tracking tonearm is a serious Hi-Fi deck.

p.s. Check out some of the other decks on this site

I think a lot of us had something similar for our first turntable as kids, it's amazing how really cool looking they were and the vibrant colors still look great today. You probably already know there really isn't a lot under the hood, the rim drive units drive me nuts because they need new rubber, belts are nice but much less common.

    In reply of the Funny-Graph:
I was able to buy the deluxe version: yes, with a AM radio.
The National Panasonic SG-345 has as well an extra switch, to bypass the "automatic" selector: not all 7" are 45 rpm, and it plays Maxi's better...
Took me some work to have the electro-mechanics working (electronic wise it was still great!)
I modded a new diamond stylus to be accommodated, works great now!
