Hello, any tips what I should look into if there's no audio coming out of the device? I'm trying to find a solution for this issue before fixing other stuff that requires to order replacements. When I got it, it was completely dead and internally there were some screws missing that secure PCB, so I'm guessing the previous owner already tried to fixing it. It previously had some battery leakage, but fortunately only the plastic window got stained by it, cleaning battery terminals and re-soldering them revived it and mechanically it seems to be fine with Play, FF and RW (outside of the fact that it skips due to cracked gear), but there's not audio coming out of the headphone jacks. Increasing the volume seems to make the slight noise louder and I tested continuity of wires going from tapehead to PCB and all of them seem to be fine.
Have you checked that the playhead is engaged (moved forward) properly when you press play? I bought a walkman that was said not to work (silent) and this was the problem. You can try to move the part manually at the same time as you press play. If this works then most likely cleaning, lubrication and changing the center gear will solve the issue.
It seems to engage, to double check I slightly pressed onto the playhead from it's back to ensure that it's engaging before, I'll try to play around with the head to see if anything works.
@Fiplo When device is is play is there any background noise (hiss) that you can hear ? Turn the volume at maximum to be sure. If amplifiers are working and there is no broken connection you should hear a hiss that increases with increasing the volume.
Alternatively, look at my DDII I offer for sale in the Classifieds thread. Admitted, it has not been restored by @Valentin but it has a new center gear and audio is great http://stereo2go.com/forums/forums/2hand-stereo2go-classifieds/
It seems to engage, I tried nudging it a bit with tweezers and it seems to be secured in. Amplifier seems to be working, the slight noise becomes louder once I increase the volume.
There are only 2 electrolytic capacitors in the audio path of the DDII: C114 and C214, the 2 output DC-blocking capacitors. If those were to be both open-circuit, no hiss would be present on the headphones. Changing the EQ from normal to metal does decrease the noise slightly ? Does turning on Dolby NR decrease the noise ? Also double check the head wires are soldered in the correct positions: - left channel should go into pin 8 and 6 of IC301 - right channel should go into pin 1 of IC301 - GND should go into pin 4 of IC301 On the PCB it seems they are ok, but also check on the head to make sure the GND is not swapped with one of the channels.
