Hey there! I am having a problem with my WM-D6C, everything functions as it should but the review function behaves incorrectly. When a tape is playing and I half press the review/rewind button in I believe it should do a slow rewind in the same way the Cue function does a slower fast forward. However it actually does the slow fast forward too somehow. (as in it does the same function as the Cue button..) The weird part is that it works fine as normal rewind when fully pressed in when playing and when tape is not playing and the button is pressed it click in as it should and rewinds as it should too. Has anyone had this function like this before too? It's a strange issue to troubleshoot with seemingly nobody else experiencing it before. I have searched all over the place on this forum and others and generally all over google to try and find someone with this same issue but I cannot find any information. I have taken apart most of the reverse/ff area cleaned all the cogs re oiled them etc. but nothing seems to help. Any advice on where to even carry on with troubleshooting would help a lot thanks.
Very interesting what you say ! Have to admit I never tried the CUE and REVIEW function on any D6C. Don't know why, probably it's habit, as I just use FF and REW and then PLAY. Anyway, I just tested the function on 2 D6Cs both fully restored. Both of these units work exactly as you describe: when I press the REW button half-way, it does a CUE instead of REVIEW. Testing without a cassette in shows exactly what the issue is: the takeup reel is still rotating when I press REW halfway and the supply reel clearly does not have enough torque to take over. If I press the REW a bit further than half-way there is a point where the function kind of works, but not really how it should. In order for this function to work, it's obvious the small play idler needs to disengage from the takeup reel while the button is half-pressed. I really wonder if this is a problem or this is how it's supposed to work. Cause if it's a problem, it seems like a very common problem. And one that I never fixed, as I wasn't aware of it.
I have never had this issue as I press the REW all the way while playing and I get a rewind but hearing the contents of the cassettes at high speed backwards. When done in forward direction I hear the contents of the cassettes high speed in the forward direction. So press the buttons all the way in and it should do what I described above. If that is what you get then it’s normal.
To be honest I think most people don't even think about the feature and do as you do and just rewind/ff and play. I only just noticed it after a few weeks of using the machine. I've also managed to get it to semi work a couple of times if the button is pressed in a very specific amount but any change in said amount and it instantly stopped doing it. What you've said might be the proper function actually, attached pic is how it's wrote in the manual.. that doesn't say anything about a half press so yeah.. I'm pretty sure your experience with it is right as you said. So now I wonder if it's a common issue where it functions like mine and Valentins but people just don't notice it is wrong because it isn't a function people care about using. It would be interesting for more owners to say how theirs functions to get a bigger sample size
You are 100% right ! When buttons are pressed all the way both functions work perfectly ! This is what would be more logical to do, since there is no indent when half pressed and one would not know how far button should be pressed.
Okay so it seems that there is no half press function then and just mine isn't working right. The fact that half pressing makes the cue work made me think it was meant to be a half press for those functions but clearly not.. When I press mine in fully it just does FF/RW with no audio. It's still a bit confusing though because the manual says "The sound is muted during this function" and I'm not sure what it is referring to. It's not a feature I even need I just worry it's a problem related to do with something that might fail eventually and prevent proper FF/RW or other issues (and it's not the common grease issue everything in my unit is cleaned and good condition) No idea how to even go about diagnosing it let alone fixing it..
I think this is normal .... the mechanism is not fully in position and does not unplug the mute switch ....... so you will hear the tape playing at high speed
I do not recommend using the cue and review functions with the head pressed onto the tape with the FF or REW button pressed. I have seen a few heads which have been badly worn by people doing this. Replacement heads are no longer manufactured.
