I found one for really cheap, cosmetically in great shape. The seller said that it won't rewind, probably belt needs to be replaced. Now I opened it up and replaced the belt, but i'm having trouble putting reassembling it. The motor seems to be just loose, and I don't know if there's like a part missing or if I'm just doing it wrong. Is the motor supposed be attached to the chassis with something? Or is it just loose and needs to be carefully kept in place? Also I think it looks really good inside, all the gears and such are in great shape? Autopsy pics included. included.
Hi, you can find the servicemanual at freeservicemanuals.info In it there is an exploded view, so you can see how it is put together. To me it looks like the holes in the motor correspond with those in the metal plate?
I did check the service manual before posting, but unfortunately it gives no information regarding the motor. It's just shows the correct placement, which is pretty obvious to begin with. https://www.nodevice.com/service-manuals/portable-radio-cassette-rec/sony/wm-ex48/224667#p2
The service manual of the WM-EX48 refers to that of the EX50; that manual gives more info for placing the motor. It seems the motor is mounted to the metal with two screws. http://freeservicemanuals.info/en/servicemanuals/viewmanual/Sony/WMEX50/WMFX50/
Motor is held in place by 2 screws with large head, which are probably missing in your unit. This mechanism will also need a new clutch gear installed and there are a couple of other items to check before it can be called a fix. For reference about common problems of this mechanism, check post #18: https://www.stereo2go.com/forums/threads/list-of-walkman-portable-recorders-common-problems.7535/
Thanks for your help! I did manage to find the missing screws and got the thing back together. But there's a new problem: the motor doesn't run. It makes this odd clicking sound but doesn't move at all. Any idea what could be wrong? Here's a video: https://www.dropbox.com/s/1x97bd62krrqcff/WhatsApp Vide.mp4?dl=0
Apart from the noise, there are 2 issues that I see: 2. The belt is way too thick for that walkman. You need a 0.5-0.6mm thickness belt for it. This is the correct one: https://fixyouraudio.com/product/belt-sony-wm-ex48/ 3. The belt is not routed correctly, it needs to go over the black pulley, not under it. About the motor, does it do the same noise without a belt in place ? It's not clear to me if the noise is mechanical or one of the 3 phases is missing. It seems more likely to be the latter. Would check the wiring to the motor and components around the motor governor IC (the one near the LED), try to put pressure and see if anything changes. These motors can sometimes go bad, as the magnet inside may break. As a suggestion to anyone reading this thread, these motors should be disassembled and re-lubricated as they're dry inside. Motor is very similar to this one and disassembly process is the same: https://stereo2go.com/forums/threads/how-to-diassemble-and-lubricate-sony-wm-ex-fx-motor.7940/
