so I'm replacing the belt on my walkman, and because my model is hard to search for I'm trying to measure the length of it to find something the same size. I was wondering though, because the instructions I'm using are not totally clear, should I measure it stretched out to its full capacity? or just how it sits naturally with no stretch? I feel like I'd get two very different answers depending on which method I use to measure and I want to get this right! Thanks!
The most common way to measure a belt is by its inner diameter since most belts available by dimension are sold by inner diameter. Folded length is a simpler measurement, especially on old belts that are deformed permanently, but less accurate. You can transform folded length to diameter by using D=L/1.57, where D - diameter L - folded length Then you should choose the next smaller belt standard dimension available assuming the one you're measuring isn't stretched. If it is stretched, you may need to choose 2 or 3 dimensions below what you have measured. Note the thickness of the belt is also important. Walkmans typically use 0.6mm, 0.8mm or 1mm thickness belts. As for stretching, the belt should be measured as-is, not stretched. For a belt to be tight when installed, it needs to be smaller than the actual length of the belt path not the same.
I've got a slide rule measurer, it has two brass posts that you mount the belt on, pull the rule apart and read the scale. If you do a lot, these are really nice for belts that are still intact or making sure the new belt is the right size.
