Panasonic RX-D29 boombox found in dumpster March 15 2024 as part of someones big clean out. Missing remote control. Erratic operation overall, digital volume control reversed 50% of the time, various other function buttons mix N' match functions etc., continual "digital sounds" coming at very low from speakers when unit powered on. Cassette working! All functions working properly. AM/FM radio working... if one can fight the erratic controls that do not correspond with the button labels. CD player not working. Laser confirmed operational, focus, sled movement, no spindle motor. Spindle motor removed and checked, powered fine with AA battery. Sled mechanism confirmed moving, lubricated etc,. Noted that liquids were spilled inside onto main unit control circuit board, small quantity, white residual salts of some kind around a few components. Cleaned all visible traces. No help to overall functions. Junk. Did I mention how ugly this thing was? There are several on e-bay now for about $40 Canadian, with the remote control, fully working. Panasonic RX-D29 is up-side-down in frame.
Speakers... on the top?? ... but firing... FORWARDS??!?? Wow, what a wild idea. I sense a design flaw here with the CD door. When it is open, the screen disappeared. Wait, that's not a design flaw... just a neat lil magic trick. Sure, that's ugly... but is it as ugly as this? https://stereo2go.com/forums/thread...view-possibly-the-ugliest-unit-ive-seen.7055/
That Aiwa was ugly alright. But more of a stupid design, a result of pandering to trends and fads of that era, the product of insecure and fearful corporate dictum's and their design teams etc,. The Aiwa thrift find was a better deal I say, with full logic tape control, remote plus the added bonus of it at least working I bet if it were taken apart and painted in a spray booth with multiple coats, primer, base coat, etc., it could look a lot better. It's the tacky silver plastic that I hate most of all. I can overlook a lot of ugly shapes as long as they are flat mat grey or black.
