Sony WM-DD33 stop button problem

Hi everyone,
I just finished (well, almost) restoring my Sony WM-DD33 with new gears and a general overhaul which has all gone well, it's now running again and sounds excellent. My only remaining problem is that I absolutely cannot make the stop button stick! All other buttons snapped back in the way they should but the stop button will not stay no matter what I do. I removed it 'by the book', pressing the black plastic insert on the tape side and it came out nicely, I can see no breakage anywhere on the button. Is there a trick I am missing here?

There's no trick to install that button back, if it doesn't click back into place it means one or both of the 2 plastic hooks have either broken partially or are a little bit bent.
Suggest to look under a mangifying glass at the 2 hooks.

 

I guess I must have broken something although I was very careful. Where are these hooks?

Also sorry about the dust, I spend an inordinate amount of time picking cat hair out of electronics with tweezers...

Indeed no image, attach it again sometimes there are errors.
The end of the black plastic part has 2 hooks, that is what keeps the button in place. It is the hooks you compressed with tweezers when you removed the buttons.

Picture is visible now. This STOP button is made of 2 parts:
- the exterior button itself (what you show in this picture);
- the part that goes into the mechanism, which also has the 2 hooks I was talking about and a spring, part which most likely remained attached to the mech;

Sometimes, the button comes out without the other part which is fine. You just need to push it back, it's a press fit.
Clean any grease that is on the middle pin and on the corresponding side on the walkman.
If the button still doesn't stay in there, glue it to the other part. But first make sure you pressed it hard enough to go in there.

Given what you show in the picture, I assume the part that remained on the mechanism is fine.

Liquid super glue, you need just a small drop in the circled area.

 

Thank you, it's all fixed! My problem turned out to be that the spring and top part of the button had come out but not the bottom part. Once I got that out and was able to place the spring underneath it everything came together the way it was meant to.
