A final remark about the case: I have one HS-J08 with the controls printed on a sticker on the case, where the others don't have any labels. Maybe it was a sticker that the user could apply, or they added them in later production series.
The "silver plastic" looks pretty special - See the line pattern that reminds me of some Sony aluminium lid designs. Maybe I'll add some pics of the (complex!) inside later on, but for now that's it on these nice 1985 Aiwa's.
Not the nicest pictures, with the bright light the damage on the black paint is amplified. Will try to make better pictures later. If you have any requests for Walkman.land, just let me know. If you're looking for specific models, good chance that I have them. Just let me know how you'd like the pictures, or pick up the walkmans to photograph them yourself.
Can I ask if when you disassembled it you noticed that it has two Sony chips?? ...mine and the J500 that I disassembled and refurbished a few months ago...I ask because externally they seem identical... do you have any photos of the inside?? to see if there are any differences
That's interesting, it looks exactly the same indeed. I will have to look up the pictures from the inside and get back to you.
According to this source you have the US version: https://personalhifiblog.blogspot.com/2011/06/about-this-blog.html?m=1 "The HS-J8 symbolizes AlWA's efforts at creating the finest, most advanced headphone stereo system possible. The array of sophisticated features Includes IC full-logic feather-touch operation, an exclusive remote control module, and versatile 3-way recording. Plus traditional AIWA quality in a light and compact design. The HS-J8 - there's simply nothing better. Later on, AIWA introduced the HS-J08 In Europe and HS-J500 in the US. due to different country regulations."
I have not indexed the entire WML database of units, so the results below are not complete. Also, I started with Sony units, now going to other brands. Any service manuals that are not on WML yet, please send preferably with source info. CX20111, also found in Hitachi unit: CX20023, very common:
Looks like it's really the same model. Maybe the tuner frequency range & steps were different between Asia/EU/US models. Or the partnumber was tied to regional certifications. I think it's the same thing as the Sony's WM-10 and WM-20 situation.
yes the cx 20111 is a radio receiver ... and the other is an amplifier ... yes I confirm same circuit to see it like this
Thanks @Timewarp for sharing this But putting the photos side by side .. there is a small difference on the radio
Nice analysis Silver965. The J500 has 2 potentiometers, a different capacitor (tantalum/electrolytic) and some different coils. The potentiometers are presumably to calibrate upper and higher limits of the FM band corresponding to the region. It confirms the theory of country specific frequency range for the FM tuner. I guess: J8 - Japan tuner J08 - Europe tuner J500 - US tuner And other than that they're the same. Makes sense?
Panasonic Shockwave SW50, SW55, SW55V and SW77. Pretty common in Japan and not valuable at all, but I think they're a pretty original take on the Sports/Rugged theme. They come in many different designs. Here's a SW55 that would look good on any soldier.
