I wonder if the design helped with the price point, I should copy that field recorder test article from Walkman Archaeology to here to compare the pricing. How does the little Sony R2R compare to the Nagra?
when i have my phase of playing around with them, i come to the conclusion, the Sony makes the best recordings of those units i have. my Nagra III probably had the hardest life, but it's that tough built, you can throw it off a running car and it will survive. the Nagra III is mono and a few years older, the Sony and Uher are stereo, but besides that, the Nagras are the most professional units. built like a swiss chronometer etc., but handling is a bit strange, if you don't use it permanent. also funny adapters for this and that (i think you know what i mean), plain fast winding in any direction takes an effort, where the Sony and the Uher are much more easy and self explaining. clear control-switches and buttons... however, my insignificant ranking as collector (and weirdo) off my units: top#1 Sony TC510/2 top#2 Nagra SN top#3 Nagra III top#4 Uher 4400 Monitor ...but please ask me again in a few month, i'm convinced, the ranking has changed
