Hello guys. I've picked up this Sharp GF9696 out of ebay recently. It has seen better days that's for sure. But for the price I got it, I couldn't resist. So I bought it. I gave it a deep clean as it was very filthy inside. I have partially re-capped the unit. Replaced many capacitors but not all of them yet. I re created the wire of the tuning dial as the original was broken. I have nearly restored the tape mechanism. Still lacking the capstan cylindrical idler to make it play cassette. I have a very big issue with: The potentiometers on the top side. Both bass and treble sliders are dead, the right volume channel slider is also half dead. And the Right Recording level potentiometer is also damaged. The speakers needs some restoring. Still missing a lot of cosmetic parts. I need help on finding potentiometers. By looking on lower end models: GF9191, 9292 and 9494 the potentiometers on top side are exactly the same, can I reuse the sliders from a lower end model? Also, the GF9696 speakers are 8ohm, however the GF9494's speakers are 4 ohm. Both GF9494 and GF9696 shares 18cm speakers. Any help is appreciated.

Sharp GF 508 and Sharp GF 505 are the 9696 and the 9494 respectively. If you know or look for those you can find parts that will work. That's what I've done for my fully working 9696

I have found a GF9494 into a very fair price, however, it feels weird to ruin a good Sharp GF9494 for parts.

I am guessing that the third wire is for the operation of the music search, but that's just a guess. I can save you the trouble of trying to install a two-wire motor in the unit that requires a three-wire motor. It's not going to happen. You can try but it just won't work. There is something in the circuitry in the motor that requires three wires. When you come across a sharp model that needs a three-wire motor. That's what you need. There's no getting around it. That is why I went to Japan and got a Japanese domestic model sharp GF-505 That was trashed but it had a good motor so I soldered in the new motor from the old unit LOL. New motor used actually but hey it worked and it's still working.

Nice. I am just glad that my own half trashed unit came with a fully working motor. My best guess about the third wire is, that it works exactly as how the PWM fans on computers, it sets the speed of the motor, as there's the external slider for pitch setting. An aftermarket motor might work, but it won't cooperate with the pitch slider.

Okay. I got the fast forward and rewind working properly with plenty of torque. Same for the APLD system. I've rubbed the idler tire with a sand paper, then replaced that small cushion with another sourced from a donor Panasonic mechanism.

What color wires did you use to get everything working? I'm guessing except for the speed control on the front?

I guess you are referring to the motor swap. I haven't tested any aftermarket motor yet. It was an idea to be applied and to be tested.
