Hi everyone, I am restoring a couple of Sony DD Walkmans: a DD33, a DD100 and a DC2 and all of them have some spots of superficial rust on the chassis and black metal tape holder. My question is if anyone had tackled this type of issues and if so, what could be the best method to fix them. I was thinking of neutralising the rust with some vinagre based solution and then clean it well to stop the process. After that I would like to apply something to protect the metal. I was thinking of applying some cold zinc paint but I don't know if it is the best idea. I would also prefer something that could resemble the original finish but I honestly am not bothered too much if it has some spots of different color. What matters is that it is fixed correctly. I uploaded pictures of all 3 Walkmans and the worst parts of them.
Hi! Thank you very much for your recommendation! I will try to get some Brasso and test it Any recommendations regarding specific types of paint? Would apply with a brush just on the specific part or would you spray paint it? Are there any color codes that are close enough to the original metal colors: grey and black (cassette holder with the head).
I have never painted a walkman before. Brasso has been very useful for removing corrosion and tarnish from metal surfaces for me and I reckon it will be good at moving small rust spots
Maybe look into Soda Blasting if it's all apart. I've done bigger stuff in the past but there's a million videos on small pen size equipment.
Thank you very much for your suggestion! I will be taking a closer look into it. If I have spare parts from a DD2 in very good condition, would you exchange the parts or restore the original ones? In a way, even if cosmetically they end up not being very good, I would like to use the original ones. I would only opt for exchanging if performance wise there would be a penalty for doing the restoration. But I would like to have your feedback on this matter.
Personally I like to keep as much original as I can but some parts may be "wear parts" and should be replaced while you have everything apart. Sometimes it depends on the complexity of taking it apart, it stinks doing it twice. I've got an Optonica Tape Deck that like a jigsaw puzzle taking apart, it still needs a rubber roller but I have no desire to take it apart again.
