If Discmans work on two 1.5v batteries, why are AC adaptors 4.5v?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I'm perplexed. All of my Discmans / CD Walkmans run on 2 AA batteries (i.e., 3vDC). But all of the period-correct Sony AC adapters I can find for them provide 4.5vDC.
    Can anyone explain why?

no relations, except that DC is higher than battery voltage, to be able to charge rechargeables without any step-up converters

my favorite Discman, Sony D-90, needs 9V AC/DC adapter but also works off 4.2V BP-2 rechargeable battery or EBP-2 adapter for two AA alkalines
