Nostalgia makes 99% of them special and the other 1% are special because they actually sound good and were well designed works of industrial art (A polite way of saying the vast majority were junk in my opinion (!)
I think most pre-84 stuff was pretty decent, as we went into the 90s, the egg shapes and high speed assembly plastic units just didn't have the same hefty builds. The hobby is very addictive although now it's also getting really popular so the days of getting equipment for nothing are just about gone.
