Olympus LS-11 "Linear PCM Recorder" that runs on 2AA battery sounds great. It does make a very nice and suitable Digital Audio Player in my opinion. I load .wav files and .mp3 files directly to it's built in 8gb memory. It also has full size SD card. Orange backlight can be selected from always off, 5, 10, 15, 20 etc., seconds per button touch to always on.

It has mostly aluminum body by the way. So many good features. Cheap on e-bay at around $90. I can recommend it for an offbeat casual DAP player. Oh yeah it makes good recordings too  It kinda just steamrollers the old Discman players for sheer convenience and display screen info.

But the best part to my way of thinking is that it runs on 2AA battery. 7 weeks of daily listening now and still full power bars are illuminated. Just like some reviews mentioned - incredible run time!

The continuous audio level indicators and bright red LED when peak / clipping occurs is useful.

Around 2010. Google will turn up some good comprehensive reviews.

never knew Olympus was actually making daps outside of that M:Robe series

speaking of which, I own an M:robe MR-100 with the unique red illumination on the controls, tried to sync it to my computer using the awful software it came with to put mp3's into it but apparently you cant use the software if its been downloaded from the internet, so you can only use the actual install disc, not even im sure if it would even fix that syncing problem so its best to switch the firmware to the one made by RockBox

even if i would switch it to that custom firmware I have another problem with it giving me an error everytime I try to turn it on, im thinking it might be an issue with the hard drive inside it so i would have to use a toothpick to hit the tiny reset button under the device

Wonder if SQ is any good? only listened to the files the last owner had put on there waaay back so you can imagine how flat the songs sound like

These higher end audio recorders like LS-11 were not meant to be DAP's... but they turn out to be better in my opinion. They can take all types of .mp3 and .wav file directly without the need for any drivers. It has 8gb internal and a full size SD card slot that takes up to 64Gb? (not sure). And it runs on 2AA battery "forever" with no built in propriety lithium battery garbage...
