I've recently bought two CDP-101's from Facebook Market Place for an absolute steal. Sure they both need some work, but I've managed to get one working about 95% with some cleaning of the draw and re-greasing, along with the laser sled. It truly sounds wonderful, even to my old and damaged ears, and I'm happy I've managed to give one of my 'grail' cd players a new lease of life. The second one, unfortunately had been sitting in someone's shed for too many years. The disc drawer now opens, but it's not reading any discs, so I'll need to figure that out with my extremely limited knowledge and tools, but I'll keep at it!
Love cover photo - what does he see there? Reminds me of an old classic "When Harry Met Sally" - whatever he is smoking, I want that!! I was curious how vintage players manage to beat, say Esoteric CD players with VRDS-Neo mechanisms. Could not find an answer but seeing SCPH-1001 (I have a dozen of these) next to SCD-1 and KPS-20i is always fun, never fails to make me feel better about myself! Due for an exact count but I believe Sony PS1 was on the Stereophile's list of Recommended Components for almost ten years: all those other losers would come and fade away but PS1 stayed We asked thousands of audiophiles... percentages given to the first decimal point, as if they did ask a few hundred. They must have attended a few lectures on statistics. Or graduated (as I did) from the "Natural Sciences Dept" where we were taught to give results to the first decimal point whatever the numbers
None of mine made the list except I do have a Playstation around here somewhere, now that I'm putting up my new rack, I might actually have room for it. On the speaker side I might have 2-3 of the "bad" ones but I like them!
The best sounding CD Players in my collection are Denon DCD Models. 1560 and an A-100. I have a Marantz SA-8004 and the two Oppos (105 and 205) w/extra lasers. I have a new laser in the 1560 and one for the A-100 but I'm not sure I'll need them. The KSA-151's appear to have hyperinflated out to somewhere in the vicinity of the Kuiper Belt. I'm sticking with what I've have. I have a CAL Tercet III in my bedroom system (SX-1280) and it's not bad, but not on the level the Denons, Marantz or the Oppos. Everyone's mileage can vary. I like extended top octaves and the fairly brutal bottom octaves of these machines, with the CAL following behind the others. They all get the job done...
