The Sony Twin Turbo earbuds always had a certain magic. I think it was the marketing, because when I was young, anything with "turbo" was super cool and always ranked high on must-have lists. Yesterday I found a decent pair of MDR-E343 Twin Turbos at a thrift store for 1 euro. The version with the gold-plated plug, no less. It's wonderful to find a bargain again; luckily, bargains still exist. They sound very '80s. Lots of emphasis on the highs and midrange, and not a very pronounced bass. With this set, the Megabass on the DD33 can easily be turned up to setting 2.
I hope the Sonys sound better than this. In the 1980s you could even get sunstrips with OBRUT written on them, so people in lesser cars could see in their rear view mirror what was about to overtake them.
We had Dodge going nuts with it, unfortunately these cars didn't last long and would turn to dust with salted roads in the winter. I had to look up the first twin turbo car which was the 1981 Maserati Biturbo, I wonder how hard it would have been to copywrite that.
It looks like that font was copied from Porsche Nowaday's, my mundane Golf has Fuel Injection, a Turbo, and a DSG gearbox, yet the only badging is "Bluemotion".
The "turbo" scam isn't typical of the eighties and is still alive and kicking. Philips, in particular, used it extensively and continues to do so over the years. Examples: Turbo Bass for black egg boomboxes Turbo Drive for VCRs Turbo Brush for vacuum cleaners Twin Turbostar for airfryers Turbo Mode for hair clippers Turbo Jet for hair dryers Turbo speed for hand mixers And let's don't forget about the Turbo Sound Machine D8444
And turbos are coming back. While in cars, it used to refer to a turbocharger in the exhaust that actually added performance, that's no longer necessary. The electric Turbo car!
What's the origin of the term? Why is it so widely used in marketing? I can imagine the first turbocharged F1 car in '77 might have played a role. The Renault RS01. As a kid, I was crazy about F1 back then. But I have no idea if it was actually popular with many people back then. F1 doesn't really interest me now, anyway. And of course...
There's actually an electric "turbo" from google AI, but it's still for IC engines. An electrically assisted turbocharger (E-Turbo) is a hybrid forced-induction system that places a high-speed electric motor on the turbocharger shaft to instantly spin the compressor, eliminating turbo lag. Unlike traditional turbos that rely solely on exhaust gas, E-Turbos provide immediate boost at low RPMs and can generate electricity, improving engine response and efficiency As a youngster I worked a Duesenberg Event at the local car museum with around 100 of them. I'm pretty sure Gary Cooper's Supercharged SSJ was there with something like 320 Hp for a fricken tank.
I really liked mine from back in the day. I dug them out a few months ago and the weak point of them was that instead of just having two wires with one going to ear in kinda a "Y" shape, they came up with the oddball junction with one wire going to one ear and then a short wire going from that ear to the other ear. I unrolled mine and low and behold the joint failed and these became unusable. Glad you found a pair that still works
