So normally i assist people in fixing their walkmans but now i really need some help with this EX7.

So i've encountered it before, cassette lid won't open because the head bridge is still up and locking the open mechanism. This is normal when you use the EX7 when it's working properly. Hit stop, bridge goes down and unlocks open mech.
And it occurs that the cassette mech gets stuck because of broken belt which this EX7 had leaving the headbridge up and still locks the open mech.
So removed old belt, cleaned batt contacts, put in batt without belt to see if motor spins, it did. Great.
So i've put in a belt so the mechanism can reset itself and drop the headbridge and hit play.
Mech did his thing, all seem to function as it should. One press = play, another one press is stop, 2 presses is fwd etc, long press is autoreverse...it's doing all these things but when i hit stop it will not unlock the open mech of the lid.

Anyone encountered this before and knows how to proceed?

    Thank you!

Ok so managed to manually open the lid by moving the slide from the backside with a presicion screwdriver.

The open mech consists of a bunch of sliding plates that operate below the headbridge. Looks like something isn't latching/grabbing properly in the open mech when the bridge drops.
Removed the beauty plate convering the headbridge so i can see what's happening. Maybe just needs a proper clean and lube, need to investigate further.
Sometimes it will also block the bridge from dropping totally.....but it plays without making any clicking noise....

Nice you got it fixed. This so common with boomboxes with soft touch cassette control. In that regard, the JVC Kabooms are the most annoying. Followed by many others. Usually, it's the belt or, indeed, congealed grease or something.

hmmmmm didn't know the EX7 was considered a boombox....

But got the opening mech working properly again. Underneath the metal plate that contains the hook there is a small metal wedge that actually grabs a pivot on the sliding bar...mine was 45 degrees out of place. Removed the little black screw that was obstructing it and reseated the wedge properly so now it protrudes.
Now when the bar slides, it grabs the wedge which pushes the metal bracket with the hook and at the same time releases the oppposite hook....
but looks like when testing the clutch gave out or something else is not properly alligned....tbc

I mean, this problem is common with boomboxes. Not that the EX7 is a boombox, of course. I can't remember ever having this problem with a Walkman.

I hate it so much that I just made a great mixtape and the boombox won't give it back

Maybe its my experience with decks...fixed many Naks that also won't open when the bridge is up....and the EX7 is ofcourse 'high end' and the complete side is the open button. Sony needed to come up with something to prevent the lid opening while in your pocket....but when this mech is misalligned like in mine it also prevents the bridge from dropping completly down. When completly down it unlocks the open mech.....sometimes progression makes shit more difficult and prone to failure...but i think in this case some nitwit didn't put it correctly back together....this nitwit now did

Concerning the tape in the boombox, you should be able to manually open it. There must ne be a small hook that needs to unlatch to open the lid but i don't know which boombox you're talking about....anyway back to the EX7
