I posted about this over on r/cassetteculture a while back and most people suggested lubrication, using a light oil such as sewing machine oil. I got myself a bottle and put a drop or two between the spindles and the casing. Unfortunately this hasn't resolved the issue. It still makes a loud high pitched whirring sound when it plays. The audio quality is really good and I replaced the belt a week or two ago so that's fine. It's not an urgent issue because I can't hear it when I have my earphones in but I just want to make sure its not an underlying serious problem or will lead to one. I'll include the video I posted on reddit, thanks in advance. https://www.reddit.com/r/cassettecu...just_got_a_wmex314_from_ebay_and_immediately/
sounds like a sqeezing motor bearing to me....did you put the correct size belt in there? A tight belt can cause friction on the motor bearing causing a high pitched squeeky sound. Motor bearing is buried on the bottom so motor has tro come out to reach the bearing. You can NOT lubricate this from the outside!
I'm sure I got the right belt, I ordered one from DeckTech specifically designed for the WM-EX314. I'm able to open the Walkman, where should I put the oil once I do?
There are 2 distinct noises in the video: - there's a low frequency periodc gear engagement noise. This is likely caused by a gear that has become slightly eccentric due to shrikage. - there's a high-pitched whine is the typical sound of a DC motor, but louder than it should be. Oil you put under the pulley a small drop so it gets into the bushing. If the back side has any hole for oiling, add a small drop there also.
