I recently changed the belt and idler tire on a Denon DRM-800A. It now plays well but it's developed a horrible screeching noise whenever the transport is engaged. I really have no idea what causes this and would appreciate any suggestions. It seems to be coming from the somewhere inside the right side of the transport unit.
Please check the video and let me know if you have any ideas!

    Many thanks,
    Magnus

These decks (DRM800, in my specific experience) seem to have a general weakness in that the *supply* spindle's axle can creep forward out of its mounting (driven glacially slowly by an over-strength spring).
Eventually the sliding parts of the spindle won't engage properly unless by sheer fluke. Then, RW stops working, FF and Play suffer by stopping dead for no obvious reason.
With continued use in this state, the reel motor's knurled pulley and the reel idler tyre get way more worn than would occur normally. Where the idler tyre engages with the supply and take-up spindles, their surfaces might get shinier than is ideal.
It's easy enough to remedy - tap the axle back until its tip is in line with the take-up spindle's axle - but the collateral damage done needs to be thought about:
    • the reel motor's knurled pulley will benefit from a good clean
    • the idler tyre will probably need replacement (I have never seen the actual size 11x17x2.5 for sale but FYA's 10.8 x 16.4 x 2.5 is a decent replacement)
    • both spindles' surface which contact the idler tyre should be cleaned (I also give them a very light going over with 800-grade paper)
    • the idler wheel's "clutch" (felt pad and spring) may have suffered though I am unsure what can actually be done about that
Any of these may affect any part of the RW-FF-Play mech, to finally get to the point!
