Hi guys. Im currently working on a new walkman. I have my WM-F65 on the workbench partially disassembled and completed the following: - removed old degraded belt and replaced with new belt - cleaned and lubricated capstan bushing I have conducted a test with 3V centre negative DC. I am able to get all pulleys to spin if I hold down the play button or FF or RW buttons, however there is a clicking or maybe better to describe it as a scraping noise happening somewhere. I believe it may be near the middle flywheel which I believe is the take up reel. Maybe the clutch on it is broken or a tooth is missing somewhere? This flywheel has a lot of lateral play. I assume this is not how it should be. I've not yet worked out how to remove this wheel to inspect further but its looking to be a big job Any advise? Has anyone worked on a F65 or similar in the past? Video of noise during playback. https://youtube.com/shorts/4TTV82Llpbw?si=Vaosrg6a9vahNB2R
Check the outer ring gears on the hubs for splits between teeth. Very common on this mechanism. Complete disassembly is the only way to get them out, then remove the tiny keeper on the hub shaft.
Thanks I'll try inspect the reel gear. It is quite a nightmare to get to. It does look like you can buy this part at least on ebay
You should be able to see a crack in the gear from the cassette tray side. I used a couple of those gears from eBay and they seem to work okay.
I can't seem to see to find any way to inspect gear from tape side. Are you seeing something in not? I might have to remove PCB
The black ring around the rim is part of the gear. If you see a split or gap in that, the gear is cracked. The gear teeth are just under the lip of the cassette tray at that edge.
When you get in there, take lots of pics, particularly of wire placement and solder joints. I didn’t have to do much desoldering, but I did do some resoldering as the wires are fiddly and tended to break at the solder joints.
Very good advice. I must admit I forgot to take photos of pcb and wires. fingers crossed now have come off already
