Hi, this is my first post.
Have been tinkering with my Sony D-22 Discman which I got from a scrap dealer.
It has all original components. After cleanup, it is spinning the disc but not reading it.
When I press play, the disc spins about 5 times at 2 sec intervals and the lens is constantly trying to focus. Then it powers off (lcd goes blank). If I press play again, same thing happens.
The spindle motor is a bit noisy but moves freely. The laser is shinning when seen through a camera and is drawing approximately 37mA, which is quite low I believe.
Found a few small bad caps. Not leaking but no capacitance. There could be more.
Could bad caps be causing this issue or is the laser weak?
    Please help.

most D-12 have troubles with sled mechanism. Remove laser, remove metal top plate and rotate gears to check that laser moves freely up and down the rail
    OR
when you desolder sled motor wires - use 1.5V (power supply or AA battery) to check the same

Which laser does yours have: KSS-162A or KSS-220A? what was the overall shape of D-12 - sometimes they were played 'to death' but it usually shows even before you hit Play

The sled is moving freely and the motor is good. The laser is KSS-220A.
The player was pretty rough from outside being at a scrap dealer, but from inside its good.
