A custom handcrafted boombox - anyone?

Any of you guys ever built your own boombox? If so I would love to see pics.

I’m working on one now. As a technology teacher I have access to a laser cutter, 3D printers, CNC routers, vinyl cutters and a bunch of other tools and machinery. I’m going all out on the project.

I love doing fictitious builds of things. So the question is - If Radio Shack released a revolutionary CD version of the Realistic SCR-8 in 1984, what would that boombox look like? I think the fictitious model number is going to be SCD-8 (Stereo Compact Disc)
Maybe single or dual cassette, a graphic EQ, Dolby, a tiny sub, and a bunch of other goodies. Built like a golden age tank. It’s not going to look exactly like its older brother…but it’s definitely going to take inspiration from it…especially those bad ass LED meters.

In reality, it’s a Bluetooth speaker…no actual functioning CD or tape as these details will be laser cut from Baltic birch…but one hell of a looker.

I’ve never owned a red boombox so I’m thinking of raging fire engine red. Maybe a few judicious white details with some chrome like some of those gorgeous Sharps.

Any suggestions or commentary appreciated. I’ll post pics throughout the process!

 

I haven't but I have seen a few pictures. To me the obvious starting point would be a car stereo (plenty to pick from) and a 12V power tool battery (which solves all the problems of charging BMS etc). This one gives the idea.

p..s. I just remembered that back in the mid 1970s I completely re-cased a transistor radio in a plywood case painted white. I had picked up a working transistor radio from the early 1960s but it was in a Jewelbox type case which was far less convenient than what became the traditional handle at the top feet on the bottom style hence the new case. No pictures despite the hours that went into it. Back then cameras were something you only used on holiday.
