from our pals on BBX-ry - who knows something about this Academy? reminds of Marantz, probably was made in Japan but the pic of the back is out focus. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-radio-Academy/303669843421?_trkparms=aid=111001&algo=REC.SEED&ao=1&asc=20160908105057&meid=b9568be2d7734e719421488093172e09&pid=100675&rk=11&rkt=15&mehot=none&sd=333702508070&itm=303669843421&pmt=0&noa=1&pg=2380057&_trksid=p2380057.c100675.m4236&_trkparms=pageci:50e54d60-ef6d-11ea-8da0-74dbd1804f89|parentrq:5e160ce81740a9cb2cf6eacafffffa2c|iid:1&redirect=mobile
It's more like a JVC, I've got the similar model around here somewhere but it might be in shrink-wrap. Here's the JVC RC-717 that's pretty close but the other model had the same button line up.
Academy was one of several small companies trying to compete against the tier 2 manufacturers like Amstrad or Binatone. I'm not sure where they were sold. Maybe Woolworth's who carried similar brands like Benkson. There are some brands (e.g. Saisho) which were only sold by one particular chain of shops but I don't think this is one of them. Looking on Ebay I did spot a couple of other Academy products https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-...800776?hash=item1cf04f1c88:g:BNcAAOSwMmRfLVjC https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Calculat...138768?hash=item56adfba990:g:xLYAAOSw-sZa3ihF https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Academy-...068461?hash=item3fe7fd2c2d:g:5QkAAOSwI25fO72v https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Academy-...501629?hash=item3fe76b31bd:g:R5wAAOSw3HdfMt-h Like Mister X has said before there were manufacturers in Japan and Hong Kong who who put your companies name on a Boombox and the Box it shipped in if you ordered a couple of hundred. Nowaday's similar products are more likely to be labelled with a once famous name like Akai. I saw some Akai DAB radios in a shop last week at a "bargain" £22 each
Here is one for Mister X. Is there an AKA ? https://www.gumtree.com/p/other-stereo-audio/5-tv-radio-cassette-player-vintage-/1382819131
I see a weird upside-down similarity between Academy and NaimAudio logo. Thanks for the tip, I will post this at NaimAudio forum
I can't tell what that is Longman, that style of setup was pretty popular but the controls don't have the quality look of the major brands. Jorge, don't forget my favorite brand, Marantz....
General MG-345 - Try searching the internet for this model. What is a fair price to pay for this model, yes who am I to be asking this question lol? Does anybody have this model? So what did they pay for it? I would like to know what it sold for when it first went on sale back in about the year of 1984.
